8BitDo introduces a smaller Xbox controller for compact comfort

8BitDo’s Ultimate Mini Xbox controller is a smaller, lighter option for gamers with smaller hands. It features Hall effect joysticks and LED lighting.

8BitDo has launched the Ultimate Mini, a wired Xbox controller 20% smaller and 10% lighter than its standard-sized counterpart. This compact design retains full-sized triggers, joysticks, and buttons, making it ideal for gamers with smaller hands, including kids and teens.

A lightweight design for better comfort

The 8BitDo Ultimate Mini weighs 189.6 grams, significantly lighter than the standard Xbox Series S and X controllers, which weigh 287 grams (with batteries). It’s also far less bulky than the original Xbox controller, “The Duke,” which tips the scales at a hefty 550 grams. This lightweight build makes it more comfortable for extended gaming sessions, particularly for those who find standard controllers unwieldy.

The Ultimate Mini is available now in the US for US$34.99 through Amazon or 8BitDo’s online store.

Familiar layout with thoughtful adjustments

Despite its smaller size, the Ultimate Mini maintains the familiar Xbox controller layout. However, 8BitDo has moved the buttons, directional pad, and magnetic Hall effect joysticks closer together to suit smaller hands. The controller also features Hall effect triggers and slightly reduced shoulder buttons for added ease of use.

A standout feature is its translucent shell, available in white, pink, or green. This design highlights the “Fire Ring” LED lights around the joysticks. These LEDs offer various modes, such as reacting to button presses with flashes, cycling through colours, or mimicking the joystick’s movement.

Compatibility and practical considerations

The 8BitDo Ultimate Mini is compatible with the Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, and Windows 10 or 11 PCs. While it lacks wireless connectivity, this omission helps keep the controller lightweight by eliminating the need for batteries.

Parents, however, should note that the wired connection lacks a breakaway connector. This feature can concern younger gamers prone to accidental tugs or throwing controllers during moments of frustration.

The Ultimate Mini offers a practical and affordable option for gamers who prefer a smaller, lighter controller without compromising on essential features.
