Google has introduced its AI Mode in Search for users in Singapore, offering a new way to handle complex and multi-layered queries. The feature, available in English, aims to provide more accurate and in-depth answers to questions that would previously have required multiple searches.
Designed for complex questions
AI Mode uses a custom version of Gemini 2.5, enabling users to input longer and more detailed queries than usual. Early trials showed that people asked questions two to three times longer than standard searches, suggesting the tool helps address queries that require greater detail. It has been especially useful for tasks such as comparing products, planning trips, or navigating complicated how-to guides.
For example, a query like “Compare safe and affordable travel destinations from Singapore for a short weekend trip in September” will generate a breakdown of possible destinations, expected travel time, weather forecasts, and other relevant details. Users can then follow up with further questions, such as “What activities would you recommend for a solo traveller?”, to refine their results.
Behind the scenes, AI Mode uses a query fan-out method, which breaks down questions into subtopics before issuing multiple queries. This approach enables Search to pull more specific and relevant information from across the web, including real-time sources such as the Knowledge Graph and shopping databases covering billions of products.
Multimodal search with voice and images
The new AI-driven experience is not limited to text. AI Mode supports multimodal input, allowing users to search with text, voice, or images. This flexibility makes it possible to ask questions in whichever way feels most natural.
By tapping the microphone icon, users can speak their queries directly into AI Mode. This is particularly useful for long and detailed questions or for on-the-go searches where typing may not be convenient.
AI Mode also integrates Google Lens, making it easier to search using images. For instance, if someone receives a plant as a gift but is unsure how to care for it, they can take a photo and ask: “What plant is this, and how do I repot and take care of it?” The system can identify the plant, provide detailed instructions, and link to additional resources.
Available now on Google Search
Singapore users can access AI Mode directly from the Google homepage starting today. The feature builds on Google’s broader efforts to enhance search capabilities with artificial intelligence, following its initial launch in the United States earlier this year.
