Nintendo adds free Dixie Kong update to Donkey Kong Country Returns
Nintendo adds Dixie Kong and a Turbo Attack mode to Donkey Kong Country Returns in a free update with Switch 2 support.
Nintendo has released a free update for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, originally launched in 2010 for the Wii. The update introduces Dixie Kong as a playable character, complete with her signature helicopter hair spin, offering players a fresh way to experience the classic platformer. Alongside the new character, the update adds a Turbo Attack mode, turning every level into a fast-paced speedrun challenge.
The update is available now for the Nintendo Switch and will also be compatible with the upcoming Switch 2. The next-generation version will feature higher resolution, enhanced visuals, and quicker load times. Players will also be able to use the GameShare feature, which lets two people play local co-op on separate devices with just one copy of the game.
Nintendo’s unusual update strategy
Nintendo’s approach to updates and upgrades over the past year has drawn attention for its unpredictability. While Donkey Kong Country Returns HD receives a free Switch 2 upgrade, other games, including more recent, graphically demanding titles like Xenoblade Chronicles X, have not yet received next-generation support. Similarly, Pikmin 4 received a free update for the original Switch, but no upgrade has been announced for Switch 2.
Even other games in the Donkey Kong franchise, such as Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, have not received comparable updates. This pattern has prompted questions about Nintendo’s decision-making and whether updates are driven by fan interest, developer passion, or broader promotional strategies.
Possible reasons behind the updates
Industry observers have speculated that the updates could be linked to upcoming media projects. Rumours suggest that Donkey Kong may be receiving a major film adaptation, which could explain why the character and franchise are receiving renewed attention. Updating classic titles could help build excitement ahead of such releases.
Nintendo’s recent announcements have shown a mix of highly anticipated releases alongside smaller, unexpected projects. From new accessories like Mario Tennis Joy-Cons to planned content for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and new Zelda Amiibo, the company’s strategy appears scattershot but purposeful. These updates highlight Nintendo’s willingness to revisit older games while also maintaining interest in ongoing franchises.
