Instagram is testing a new feature that could significantly change how creators share external content on the platform. The company has begun experimenting with clickable links inside post captions, though the test currently appears to be limited to users subscribed to Meta Verified.

For years, Instagram has tightly restricted link sharing. Users could typically place clickable links only in their profile bio or in Stories and Reels. Standard post captions, despite being widely used for descriptions and commentary, have never supported clickable hyperlinks.
The new trial was first highlighted by blogger Andrea Valeria, who shared screenshots showing a working clickable link embedded in one of her Instagram captions. The link directed followers to her Substack page, suggesting that creators could soon promote newsletters, websites and other external content more directly within their posts.
Meta begins testing clickable caption links
According to Valeria, an in-app message informed her that she could include up to ten clickable links per month in her captions. The message suggested that the feature is tied to a Meta Verified subscription, which provides additional tools and visibility features for creators.
Meta later confirmed that it is testing clickable links in captions with a group of Meta Verified subscribers. However, the company did not disclose how many users are participating in the trial or whether it intends to roll the feature out more broadly.
Early observations suggest the feature may still be limited in its functionality. In Valeria’s example, the link appeared clickable when the post was viewed through Instagram’s mobile application. The same post, however, did not display a clickable link when viewed on Instagram’s website.
The limited rollout indicates that the company is still evaluating how the feature works in real-world conditions. Testing new tools in small groups enables platforms to measure how users interact with them before deciding whether to make them permanent features.
For creators, even a limited trial could represent an important shift. The ability to include links directly in captions would allow users to promote articles, newsletters, online stores and other platforms without relying on profile links or Stories.
Long-standing restrictions on link sharing
Instagram’s strict limitations on external links have been a defining feature of the platform since its early years. By preventing clickable links in captions, the company kept users within its own ecosystem and encouraged interactions to remain inside the app.
These restrictions also gave rise to an entire ecosystem of so-called “link in bio” services. Platforms such as Linktree allow creators to host multiple external links on a single page, which they then connect to their Instagram profile bio.
Creators frequently direct followers to these pages by including phrases such as “link in bio” within captions. This workaround has become so common that it is now a standard practice across the influencer and creator economy.
If Instagram eventually introduces clickable caption links more widely, it could reshape how creators share content and direct audiences to external platforms. Embedding links directly in posts would make it easier for followers to access articles, products, or subscription pages without leaving the post.
However, the current test suggests that restrictions may still apply. A cap of ten links per month would limit how frequently creators could use the feature. As a result, many users might still rely on link-in-bio services for regular promotion of external content.
The change could also influence how creators design their posts, as captions become a more important tool for driving traffic beyond Instagram.
Link sharing is increasingly tied to paid features
The experiment also reflects Meta’s broader strategy of attaching advanced creator tools to paid subscriptions. The clickable link test appears to be restricted to Meta Verified subscribers, a programme that offers account verification, support services, and additional features.
Meta Verified for creators currently starts at US$14.99 per month. Higher-tier plans can cost up to US$499.99 per month, depending on the tools and services included.
The company has previously tested other link-related features behind the same paywall. In recent Facebook experiments, Meta explored limiting creators’ ability to share links unless they subscribed to Meta Verified.
Such tests suggest the company views link sharing as a premium capability rather than a standard feature available to all users. By tying it to subscriptions, Meta could create additional incentives for creators to pay for the service.
For professional creators, the ability to include links directly in captions could make the subscription worthwhile, particularly for those promoting newsletters, online shops or independent media platforms.
At the same time, the strategy may raise questions among creators who rely on free tools to reach audiences across multiple platforms. If widely adopted, a paid link-sharing model could change how independent creators build and maintain their online presence.
Meta has not announced any timeline for a broader rollout of clickable caption links on Instagram. For now, the feature remains an experiment available to a limited group of Meta Verified subscribers.
