Onimusha returns: Capcom unveils Way of the Sword

Onimusha returns! Capcom unveils Way of the Sword, a new game set for release in 2026 that brings modern action to the classic series.

Fans of the Onimusha series, rejoice! After a long wait, Capcom has announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword, marking the first new entry in the beloved franchise since the original game debuted in 2001. This exciting announcement was made during The Game Awards 2024, sparking excitement among long-time fans of the dark action-adventure series.

A fresh take on a classic favourite

The upcoming game promises a modern twist on the classic Onimusha formula. Unlike earlier titles, which featured fixed camera perspectives, Way of the Sword adopts a more dynamic approach. The trailer reveals a gripping single-player experience of intense swordplay, atmospheric storytelling, and familiar elements like collecting golden orbs during combat.

In the teaser, a lone warrior—reminiscent of Samanosuke, the protagonist of earlier games—battles hordes of undead samurai in a bloody spectacle. The combat is fluid and brutal, staying true to the series’ roots while introducing modern gameplay elements.

Capcom’s official description teases, “A lone samurai steps forth — his blade sharpened, soul anew. The Onimusha series by Capcom reawakens with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a brand new title coming in 2026.” This nod to nostalgia, combined with updated visuals and gameplay, will surely draw in returning fans and newcomers.

A 25-year legacy lives on

It’s been a long journey for Onimusha enthusiasts. The original game launched on the PlayStation 2 in 2001, quickly becoming a fan favourite thanks to its unique blend of historical Japan, supernatural elements, and intense action. While the first game was remastered in 2019, the franchise has been relatively quiet for years.

Now, with Way of the Sword, Capcom looks set to revitalise the series, bringing it to the latest generation of consoles. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. While it won’t be available until 2026, the announcement alone is enough to reignite excitement among fans. It will have been 25 years since the series first debuted by the time it launches.

Trailer sparks excitement

Although the whole game is still years away, the reveal trailer is already making waves. The footage highlights a dark, atmospheric setting with stunning visuals that fully embrace modern hardware capabilities. Age-restricted due to its violent content, the trailer sets the tone for the intense action fans can expect from the upcoming release.

With its dynamic swordplay, haunting enemies, and nostalgic callbacks, Onimusha: Way of the Sword seems poised to deliver an unforgettable experience. Fans will be eagerly counting down the days until they can again take up the mantle of a samurai battling the forces of darkness.
