FairPrice Group (FPG) has opened the world’s first generative AI-powered supermarket at Punggol Coast Mall in Singapore, unveiling a new flagship FairPrice Finest outlet designed to transform the retail experience. The launch marks the first milestone in the company’s Store of Tomorrow programme, which was introduced earlier this year in partnership with Google Cloud.
Introducing new customer experiences
The new store features a suite of AI-driven innovations aimed at making grocery shopping more convenient and personalised. Shoppers will be able to use Smart Carts and AI-powered assistants that recommend products and promotions tailored to their habits. Digital price tags provide real-time updates on discounts while reducing the need for printed signage. Customers can also access digital “endless aisles” by scanning QR codes in-store, allowing them to browse and purchase a wider range of products for delivery.
The checkout process has also been redesigned. Discounts are automatically applied for groups such as seniors, Pioneer and Merdeka Generation members, and Community Health Assist Scheme cardholders, eliminating the need for manual verification.
Empowering frontline staff
Alongside customer-facing upgrades, the Store of Tomorrow initiative also introduces new tools for FPG’s employees. Advanced CCTV analytics, powered by Vision AI, alert staff in real time when shelves require restocking or when an area needs attention. The Grocer Genie app, another AI-driven solution, helps assign tasks, answer staff queries, and deliver operational insights to improve store efficiency.
Vipul Chawla, Group CEO of FairPrice Group, emphasised that the vision extends beyond technology itself. “Realising FPG’s Store of Tomorrow vision is ultimately about much more than implementing novel solutions to ‘wow’ customers – it is about harnessing the power of digital innovations like gen AI to deliver on FPG’s purpose of making every day a little better for those it serves, by being easy on the wallet, experience, and planet,” he said.
Building the future of retail with AI
The Punggol Coast Mall outlet is located in the heart of Singapore’s emerging technology hub, often referred to as the nation’s “Silicon Valley.” It serves as a testbed for over 20 new digital solutions that FPG aims to trial annually over the next three years. Insights gained will guide the rollout of successful initiatives across its network of more than 570 stores and touchpoints, which see over a million customer interactions daily.

The project is anchored in FPG’s multi-year collaboration with Google Cloud. The technology stack includes Vertex AI, enterprise search, and Google’s suite of generative models such as Gemini, Chirp, Imagen, and Veo. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, described the launch as a landmark moment. “Our expanded partnership with FPG and the opening of its ‘Store of Tomorrow’ is a defining moment for agentic AI deployment in retail. It reinforces FPG’s commitment to applying enterprise AI at scale to elevate customer experiences and foster a culture of innovation powered by people. We see FPG’s AI transformation—extending from the storefront to the back office—as a blueprint for the entire retail industry,” he said.
As part of its prototype, pilot, and scale approach, FPG will evaluate these new solutions based on customer value and operational efficiency before wider deployment. Beyond supermarkets, the company plans to extend innovations to its other businesses, including Kopitiam food courts, Cheers convenience stores, and Unity pharmacies.
