Fujifilm’s new X Half brings vintage charm to modern photography

Fujifilm X Half combines retro charm with modern features and a fun diptych photo style. It is available now for pre-order at S$999.

If you enjoy photography with a touch of nostalgia, the new Fujifilm X Half could be just what you’re looking for. This latest camera takes inspiration from classic half-frame film cameras of the past and gives them a fresh digital twist. With its compact size, retro design, and affordable price of US$999, it’s a camera that’s easy to fall in love with — whether you’re a beginner or love the look of vintage gear.

A modern take on a classic half-frame design

The name X Half comes from the half-frame cameras of the 1960s. These cameras earned their name because they used only half of a 35mm film frame for each picture. That meant you could get twice as many photos on a single roll — a big deal in the film era. While the X Half isn’t a film camera, it re-creates the half-frame experience by encouraging you to shoot in a vertical 3:4 format.

Using the dedicated X Half app to create a side-by-side diptych, you can stitch two vertical shots together, giving a similar feel to old half-frame photos. It’s a creative and fun process that sets the X Half apart from other digital cameras.

Inside, the X Half uses a 1-inch sensor that takes 18-megapixel images. It’s paired with a fixed 32mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens, making it ideal for everyday shooting. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 10cm so you can get up close for detailed shots.

Designed for a hands-on experience

The X Half includes a few thoughtful design features to make the experience feel even more like shooting with an old film camera. For one, it has an optical viewfinder designed for vertical shooting. This matches the camera’s tall layout and makes it easier to frame your shots the old-school way.

On the back, there are two displays. The main screen shows your usual photo preview and settings. To its left is a secondary display highlighting which Film Simulation mode you’re using — or it can help you scroll through menus and other options.

Speaking of Film Simulations, the X Half offers 13 different looks, including favourites such as Classic Neg., Velvia, Reala Ace, Astia, and Provia. These are designed to mimic the colours and tones of actual Fujifilm film stocks. There’s also a unique Film Camera Mode, where you pick a roll size and have to “wind” the Frame Advance Lever between shots, just like in the old days.

This thoughtful approach makes the X Half feel more than just another digital camera. It creates a slower, more mindful style of photography that encourages you to take your time and enjoy each shot.

Pricing, extras, and where to buy

The Fujifilm X Half is now available for pre-order at S$999, and Fujifilm is throwing in some nice extras if you order early. These include a 32GB SD card, a stylish X Half pouch, a photo print voucher, and even a workshop session to help you get started. Pre-orders are open until June 15, and the camera will appear in stores shortly after.

You can pre-order the X Half from Fujifilm’s online shop or through their official stores on Lazada and Shopee.

The Fujifilm X Half is a bold and refreshing departure from the usual camera race for more megapixels and complex features. Instead, it offers a fun, creative experience at a reasonable price—and that could make it Fujifilm’s next big success.
