Canon launches compact RF75-300mm telephoto lens for beginner photographers

Canon introduces the RF75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, a lightweight and affordable telephoto zoom option for beginner photographers.

Canon has introduced a new lightweight and budget-friendly telephoto zoom lens, the RF75-300mm f/4-5.6, for its RF mount camera system. Designed to be accessible to beginners and casual photographers, the lens delivers extended reach while maintaining a compact form factor.

Lightweight design for everyday use

Weighing just 507g—roughly the same as a 500ml bottle of water—and measuring around 14.6cm in length, the RF75-300mm f/4-5.6 is Canon’s lightest full-frame telephoto zoom lens in the RF mount line-up. When paired with compact APS-C cameras such as the EOS R100, EOS R50, or the full-frame EOS R8, the total setup stays under 1kg, making it an ideal travel companion.

Andrew Koh, Senior Vice President and Head of Singapore Operations Group at Canon Singapore, said, “The RF75-300mm f/4-5.6 opens up a world of possibilities for users with a telephoto lens’ reach, allowing them to get up close to objects that are at a distance away. Designed to be compact and at an affordable price point, we are looking to empower users with accessibility to capture breathtaking images at their fingertips.”

Versatile performance across focal lengths

On full-frame cameras, the 75-300mm range covers medium to true telephoto lengths, making the lens suitable for outdoor portraits, wildlife, sports, and scenic photography. The lens is also capable of producing a pleasing telephoto compression effect, which can enhance the appearance of patterns or make background elements appear closer to the subject.

For APS-C cameras or when using 1.6x crop mode, the effective focal range becomes 120mm to 480mm, giving users additional zoom capabilities. This extended range benefits photographers capturing subjects such as birds from a distance. The lens also supports semi-macro photography with a maximum magnification of 0.25x at 300mm, which increases to 0.4x on APS-C bodies—ideal for capturing fine details in smaller subjects.

Smooth background blur and optical construction

The variable maximum aperture ranges from f/4 at the 75mm wide end to f/5.6 at the 300mm telephoto end. This aperture range, combined with the lens’s long focal lengths, allows for natural subject separation and attractive bokeh effects. The optical construction consists of 13 elements in 9 groups and includes seven aperture blades to enhance background blur characteristics.

Although image stabilisation is not built into the lens, its lightweight design and compatibility with Canon cameras that feature in-body stabilisation can help users achieve steady shots in various conditions. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 1.5 metres and supports 58mm filters.

Availability and pricing

Canon’s RF75-300mm f/4-5.6 will be available in Singapore from May 2025 at a recommended retail price of S$309 through Canon Authorised Retailers.
