Clair Obscur fans speculate that the Expedition 33 update could introduce an evil Esquie boss fight

Fans speculate that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's upcoming update may introduce a darker version of Esquie, following new artwork and social media hints.

Fans of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are eagerly discussing what may be included in the game’s newly announced free major update. Developer Sandfall Interactive revealed earlier in October that the update will feature new enemies and unexpected additions, although exact details have not yet been disclosed. Despite the lack of confirmed information, players have begun forming theories based on promotional art and the developer’s recent social media changes, with many convinced the new content could involve a darker version of Esquie.

Artwork sparks speculation

The main source of speculation stems from a new piece of artwork released alongside the update announcement. The image appears to depict a scene outside the painted world familiar to players, possibly from the protagonist Verso’s childhood bedroom. In the foreground is an open notebook showing a sketch of Verso mounted on Esquie, wielding a sword and dagger. At the same time, the beloved camp companion, known for providing wine and comfort to the expedition group, looks on. The pair appear to be charging toward a mysterious, cloaked figure.

This single image has prompted many fans to believe that Esquie may assume a more prominent, potentially threatening role in the upcoming update. Several cast members, including Esquie’s voice actor Maxence Cazorla, are confirmed to be recording new lines, suggesting the character will indeed feature. In the base game, Esquie is portrayed as gentle and affectionate, someone whom the expeditioners turn to in times of need. Yet the character is also described as “the most powerful creature in the world” and, at one point, states, “Bad things happen, we get mad,” hinting at a darker nature beneath his cheerful exterior.

Social media change strengthens theories

Further fuel was added to the discussion when Sandfall Interactive changed the game’s profile picture across its social channels. The new image depicts a dark, shadowy figure resembling Esquie, but with red eyes and a spiked collar, creating an ominous impression. Some fans responded enthusiastically, with one calling out, “ESQUIE BOSSFIGHT ESQUIE BOSSFIGHT,” while others suggested this could signify a “true super boss” encounter.

However, the developer has also launched a seasonal Nevron Takeover event on social media, beginning 25 October, where fans are encouraged to share themed art pieces based on prompts such as “Musical,” “Creepy,” and “Nevrons in Baguette Outfits.” Because of this, some players argue the new profile image could be a playful addition tied to Halloween rather than a hint at upcoming gameplay content. Nonetheless, the close resemblance to Esquie and his appearance in the promotional artwork has made it difficult for fans to dismiss the idea entirely.

Fan theories explore Esquie’s possible origins

Some players have taken the speculation even further, suggesting the darker Esquie could be linked to Clea, Verso and Alicia’s sister. One theory proposes that Clea may have created a frightening version of Esquie during childhood to scare Verso, and that the character may now return in the new update. This idea aligns with Clea’s established role in the story, as she has previously been shown influencing and altering the painted world, including manipulating Simon, one of the game’s most challenging bosses.

Clea’s voice actor, Devora Wilde, is also returning to record new dialogue, prompting additional curiosity, as Clea’s direct involvement in the original game was relatively limited.

For now, none of these theories has been confirmed. The update could reveal a darker side of Esquie, or the character may remain the warm and light-hearted figure players know well. But with the imagery and returning cast, the door remains open for possibilities that fans are eager to explore.
