Microsoft adds on-device AI support to the Advanced Paste tool in Windows 11

Microsoft updates Advanced Paste in Windows 11 with on-device AI support, new model options and an improved interface.

Microsoft has introduced a significant update to its Advanced Paste tool in PowerToys for Windows 11, bringing support for on-device artificial intelligence. The new feature, available with the PowerToys 0.96 update, allows users to run certain AI tasks without relying on cloud services. This shift enables faster responses, improved privacy and reduced reliance on paid API credits.

On-device AI comes to Advanced Paste

With the latest update, Advanced Paste can now route AI requests through Microsoft’s Foundry Local tool or the open-source Ollama platform. Both options allow AI models to run locally on a device’s neural processing unit rather than sending data to external servers.

This means users can complete actions such as translating or summarising copied text without an internet connection. It also eliminates the need to purchase API credits for these features and ensures sensitive information remains on the device. Microsoft says the enhancement gives users more control over how their data is processed and makes everyday tasks quicker and more convenient.

Broader model support expands flexibility

In addition to introducing on-device AI, the update also provides broader support for online models. Advanced Paste now works with platforms such as Azure OpenAI, Gemini and Mistral. Previously, the tool only supported OpenAI’s models, limiting options for users who preferred other AI services.

The change allows people to choose the model that best suits their needs, whether they want cloud-powered results or fully offline processing. By integrating several major AI systems, Microsoft aims to make Advanced Paste a more adaptable tool for different workflows and environments.

Refreshed interface improves usability

Microsoft has also added a small design update to improve the overall user experience. The revised interface now displays the current clipboard content directly inside the tool, making it easier to review text before applying AI actions. A new drop-down menu also lets users quickly select their preferred AI model, streamlining the process and reducing unnecessary steps.

The company says these updates are part of an ongoing effort to refine PowerToys and deliver tools that enhance productivity for Windows 11 users. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into the operating system, features like Advanced Paste are expected to play an increasingly important role in everyday computing.
