Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow launches on 4 December

The classic stealth series returns with Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, launching 4 December on Meta Quest, PS VR, and SteamVR.

The acclaimed stealth franchise Thief is making a long-awaited comeback, this time in virtual reality. The new instalment, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, will be released on 4 December, marking the series’ first full entry since 2014.

A new chapter in the Thief universe

Announced in June, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is a VR-exclusive experience, following in the footsteps of other major titles such as Half-Life: Alyx. The game is set roughly halfway between the events of the original Thief trilogy and the 2014 reboot, expanding on the lore of the beloved stealth franchise.

Players will take on the role of Magpie, a skilled and cunning thief who uncovers a powerful artefact known as the Eye. This legendary relic holds a mysterious link to the past, drawing Magpie into a deeper web of intrigue. The story unfolds in a dark, oppressive city ruled by Baron Ulysses Northcrest, described as “a tyrant who crushes rebellion before it can take root.” The setting promises a mix of political tension, stealth-driven missions, and opportunities for exploration—all hallmarks of the Thief series.

Designed for full immersion in VR

Publisher Vertigo Games has shared a preview of gameplay footage captured on Meta Quest, offering fans a first look at the game’s mechanics and atmosphere. The VR format allows players to experience the world of Thief with a new level of immersion, from carefully picking locks to sneaking through shadows in full 3D space.

The developers have emphasised that Thief VR aims to stay true to the franchise’s roots while embracing the unique possibilities of virtual reality. With players able to physically interact with the environment, each heist and stealth encounter is designed to feel more tactile and personal.

When Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow arrives in December, it will be available across several major VR platforms, including Meta Quest, PS VR, and SteamVR. The title is currently listed at US$30 on Steam and Meta, but those who pre-order can secure a discounted price of US$27. Pricing and pre-order details for the PlayStation Store version have not been confirmed yet.

A modern revival of a classic series

Thief has long been regarded as one of the pioneers of the stealth genre, influencing countless games since its debut in the late 1990s. The move to virtual reality represents a bold step for the franchise, offering long-time fans and new players alike a fresh perspective on its stealth-driven gameplay.

By combining the atmospheric design and tension of the original titles with the immersive power of VR, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow seeks to redefine what it means to sneak, steal, and survive in the shadows. Whether players are returning veterans or newcomers to the series, the December release marks an important moment for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
