A Windows 11 clipboard history issue arises after a recent update

The Windows 11 24H2 update has caused Clipboard History to stop working for many users, with no official fix yet in sight.

Windows 11’s recent annual update, which was expected to introduce exciting features and improvements, has led to many problems for users. The Windows 11 24H2 update, launched in 2024, has been causing frustration and inconvenience, with users reporting various technical issues affecting daily functionality.

Among these issues is a broken Clipboard History, a valuable feature that many rely on. As a result, users are searching for workarounds while they wait for an official fix.

Widespread issues reported

Many users have faced several challenges after installing the Windows 11 24H2 update. Some have experienced dead internet connections, others have noticed undeletable cache files piling up, and some have dealt with driver-related crashes and disappearing mouse cursors. Additionally, some of the update’s changes involved removing several features and apps, further adding to users’ frustrations.

The Clipboard History feature, however, stands out as a particularly aggravating problem. This feature, which keeps track of everything you copy—from text to images—allows users to paste content that was copied much earlier, making it easier to retrieve and use past items. Unfortunately, after the update, this feature stopped working for many users.

When accessing Clipboard History, affected users receive a message stating, “You’ll see clipboard history here once you’ve copied something,” even though they have already copied items. This error has left many unable to access their clipboard history, forcing them to copy items again manually, losing the convenience of the feature.

An issue ignored despite prior reports

What’s particularly frustrating for users is that this issue was reported by Windows Insiders during the testing phase of the Windows 11 24H2 update — about three months ago. Even though the problem was flagged early, Microsoft did not prioritise fixing it before the update’s release. As a result, the Clipboard History issue made its way into the final version of the update, affecting many users who rely on this tool.

Microsoft has not yet officially acknowledged the bug, but users hope that a fix will be included in an upcoming patch. With the issue impacting some users’ day-to-day workflow, a prompt solution is eagerly awaited.

A possible workaround for Clipboard History

In the meantime, while Microsoft works on a permanent fix, you can try a temporary workaround to restore the Clipboard History functionality. If you’re facing this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Under System, scroll down and select Clipboard.
  3. Toggle the Clipboard history off and then back on.
  4. Toggle Clipboard history across your devices, off and on.
  5. Disable Suggested actions, then use the Windows key + V shortcut to open Clipboard History. After checking the clipboard, you can re-enable Suggested actions if needed.

Following these steps might help you get Clipboard History working again. However, it’s important to remember that this is just a temporary fix, and users will have to wait for an official update from Microsoft to resolve the problem entirely.

With the update bringing both improvements and headaches, users are hopeful that Microsoft will release a patch sooner rather than later to address the Clipboard History bug and the other issues that have arisen.
