Apple’s budget MacBook could rival Chromebook pricing

Apple’s rumoured budget MacBook could launch in late 2025 for US$599–US$699, challenging Chromebooks and boosting MacBook sales.

Apple is reportedly preparing to release a low-cost MacBook that could compete directly with Chromebooks and affordable Windows laptops, potentially marking a significant shift in the company’s pricing strategy.

Pricing could undercut existing MacBooks

Industry sources quoted by DigiTimes suggest the new budget MacBook could be priced between US$599 and US$699, equivalent to around S$771 to S$900. If correct, the device would be far cheaper than Apple’s MacBook Air (M4), which starts at S$1,499.

The move could position Apple to appeal to budget-conscious consumers, particularly students and first-time laptop buyers who may have previously opted for competing devices in the lower price range. This would be the first time Apple has entered the market segment dominated by Chromebooks and low-end Windows machines.

Production timeline and expected launch

According to DigiTimes, component production for the new model is expected to begin before the end of this quarter. Final assembly is scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter of the year, with the launch window anticipated for late 2025 or early 2026.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who first reported details of the project in June, said the budget MacBook will likely feature a 13-inch display and an A18 Pro chip. It is expected to come in four colour options: silver, blue, pink and yellow. This combination of hardware and pricing suggests that Apple may be adopting a similar strategy to its iPad lineup, which utilises A-series chips to power entry-level devices.

Potential impact on sales

Industry watchers believe the low-cost MacBook could significantly boost Apple’s laptop sales. Estimates suggest total MacBook shipments could reach 25 million units next year if the budget model proves popular.

By offering an affordable option, Apple could widen its customer base and strengthen its foothold in markets where price sensitivity is a key factor. While the company has traditionally focused on premium hardware, this move could allow it to compete more effectively against brands offering low-cost alternatives.

With its combination of competitive pricing, Apple’s design appeal and the potential performance of the A18 Pro chip, the budget MacBook may become a notable contender in the entry-level laptop market.
