Lego Fortnite expands with a new GTA-inspired city and more

Lego expands in Fortnite with Brick Life, a GTA-inspired city, and rebrands the Lego Fortnite Odyssey. Plus, text chat updates and a new FPS mode.

Lego is making big moves in Fortnite, adding an exciting new chapter to its collaboration with Epic Games. A year after the introduction of Lego Fortnite, a platform within Fortnite offering diverse game experiences beyond its iconic battle royale mode, Lego is now set to launch a massive expansion. This includes a brand-new roleplaying city called Brick Life, reminiscent of the popular Grand Theft Auto V roleplay servers, alongside a rebranding of its core survival game.

Step into the world of Brick Life

The headline addition is Brick Life, described as “an all-new social roleplay experience.” This game mode invites players to explore a vibrant, Lego-themed city with up to 31 others. You can take on unique jobs such as courier, sushi chef, or security guard, design your dream home, and roam through engaging locations like a magical school or a rooftop club.

For those seeking more structure, there are missions to complete, offering plenty of variety for players of all ages. The concept is a family-friendly alternative to the immersive role-play servers that have made GTA V a phenomenon, and Epic Games does not shy away from the comparison.

Brick Life will launch inside Fortnite on December 12, though South Korean players won’t have access to it due to regional restrictions.

A rebrand for Lego Fortnite

In addition to unveiling Brick Life, Epic and Lego have rebranded the original Lego Fortnite survival mode, giving it the new name Lego Fortnite Odyssey. In the future, “Lego Fortnite” will refer to the overarching hub where all Lego-related content within Fortnite can be accessed.

Over the past year, Lego and Epic have deepened their collaboration by introducing new games and enabling players to create their own Lego-inspired experiences within Fortnite.

This partnership could offer a glimpse of what’s to come in Epic and Disney’s planned “persistent universe,” a joint project announced in February following Disney’s US$1.5 billion investment. While details about the virtual world remain scarce, these expansions suggest a vision of interactivity and creativity.

New features and modes for Fortnite

Epic Games announced improvements to Fortnite’s communication tools, rolling out a revamped text chat system across all game modes starting December 10. The system will feature three chat options:

  • Party channel: For private chats with your squad.
  • Game channel: A public chat for players on the same island.
  • Direct messages: For private conversations with friends.

To ensure a safe environment, particularly for younger players, the chat includes two filters: one that blocks personal information and another that screens mature language or toxic comments. These filters will be automatically enabled for players under 13. Similar to Epic’s voice reporting tool, a reporting system will also be available.

Meanwhile, Fortnite continues to evolve at a fast pace. The game recently launched a new chapter following a music-themed season and reintroduced the nostalgic Fortnite OG mode as a permanent option. A fresh multiplayer first-person shooter mode called Ballistic will debut on December 11.

With Brick Life, Lego Fortnite Odyssey, and exciting new features, Fortnite shows no signs of slowing down, ensuring players have more to explore than ever.
