OpenAI launches Sora: A groundbreaking AI video generator

OpenAI debuts Sora, an AI video generator that allows users to create 20-second clips using text or images with robust editing tools.

OpenAI has launched its highly anticipated AI video generator, Sora, as part of its “12 Days of OpenAI” event. The new tool offers groundbreaking video creation capabilities, allowing you to generate and edit videos using text prompts or reference images, pushing the boundaries of AI-powered content creation.

A major step in OpenAI’s roadmap

On June 10, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed Sora during a live stream, describing it as a key milestone in the company’s journey toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Starting Monday afternoon, Sora will be made available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in the U.S. and globally.

Unlike OpenAI’s other tools, which are built on the GPT-4 framework, Sora is a unique model operating on a separate platform. It is accessed via Sora.com rather than the standard ChatGPT interface. However, at the time of the announcement, Sora.com had not yet gone live.

Features tailored for creators

Sora is designed to create video clips between 5 and 20 seconds long, with resolutions ranging from 480p to 1080p. You can use the tool to generate videos from scratch or edit and extend existing clips. Sora includes a storyboard feature that lets creators combine multiple prompts into a seamless cinematic sequence.

Subscribers will enjoy tailored usage limits based on their plans. ChatGPT Plus users can generate up to 50 monthly clips at resolutions of up to 720p, with a maximum clip length of five seconds. On the other hand, Pro subscribers have unlimited access to all resolutions and durations, up to 20 seconds per clip.

Marques Brownlee, a popular tech YouTuber, was among the first to preview Sora. In a review released Monday morning, he shared his initial thoughts on the tool’s capabilities, hinting at its potential for content creators and filmmakers alike.

A tool for the next generation of creators

In addition to its video generation features, Sora offers robust editing tools to refine content. This ensures that whether you’re a seasoned video producer or an amateur exploring AI-powered creation, you’ll have the flexibility to bring your vision to life.

The launch of Sora signals OpenAI’s commitment to expanding its AI tools beyond text and image generation. With its user-friendly design and advanced capabilities, Sora could redefine how creators approach video production in the digital age.
