Nintendo’s GameCube controller returns for Switch 2 with new features

Nintendo’s GameCube controller for the Switch 2 is back in stock with wireless upgrades, GameChat support, and USB-C charging.

If you’ve been waiting for the new GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2, now’s your chance. The controller is back in stock and available for US$64.99 at the My Nintendo Store. But before you can order it, you must have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which starts at US$19.99 per year for individual users. Once you’re signed in to your Nintendo Account, you can add the controller to your cart and check out. Remember, though, that it’s limited to one per account.

This updated version of the beloved GameCube controller isn’t just about nostalgia. Nintendo has brought modern upgrades while keeping the classic look and feel that long-time fans will love. It’s designed to offer an authentic experience for GameCube games available through the Switch Online Expansion Pack. So, this controller might be the perfect match if you’re revisiting games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker or Soulcalibur II.

A modern twist on a classic design

The standout feature of the new controller is its wireless connectivity, which replaces the old cable and gives you the freedom to move without restriction. You’ll also find a GameChat button, which opens up Nintendo’s new Discord-style voice chat feature. GameChat is free until March 31, 2026, giving you nearly two years to enjoy it with no added cost.

If you enjoy capturing moments while gaming, there’s now a dedicated capture button, letting you snap screenshots quickly — perfect for showing off your top finishes in Mario Kart World. Plus, it charges via USB-C, making it more convenient and aligned with modern tech standards.

While the controller is mainly made for GameCube titles through the Expansion Pack, it can also be used with other Switch 2 games. It even supports gyro controls, which adds more precision for certain games. However, Nintendo notes that the controller is missing some buttons and features found on other Switch 2 controllers. Depending on the game, you may not get full functionality or the best experience outside GameCube titles.

Relive the GameCube era on your Switch 2

It’s not just about playing old games — it’s about how you play them. The feel of the buttons, the layout, and the comfort of the controller all make a difference when diving into classic adventures. Whether you’re racing through Mario Kart World, exploring The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, or just reliving your favourite GameCube moments, this controller is built to offer a genuine experience.

To make the most of it, ensure you’re subscribed to the Switch Online Expansion Pack, where all the GameCube classics live. Without that subscription, the controller won’t function as intended with those titles. And while it’s still limited to one per customer, don’t wait too long — Nintendo’s exclusive accessories tend to sell out fast.

So, if you’re ready to travel back in time—but with better technology—now’s the time to act.
