Pokemon developer Game Freak sets summer 2026 release window for Beast of Reincarnation
Game Freak announces Beast of Reincarnation, a new action RPG launching in summer 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.
Game Freak has confirmed a summer 2026 release window for Beast of Reincarnation, a new action role-playing game coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. The title marks a significant step for the studio, best known globally for the Pokemon series, as it moves into large-scale development outside Nintendo-exclusive hardware.

The game was revealed during an Xbox Developer Direct presentation, where Game Freak shared early gameplay footage and details about its design direction. Beast of Reincarnation will also launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one, giving subscribers immediate access.
Described as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG”, the project represents the studio’s first full AAA production that is not connected to the Pokemon brand. The announcement signals Game Freak’s clear intention to broaden its portfolio and appeal to a wider audience across consoles and PC.
A new direction for Game Freak
Beast of Reincarnation stands out as Game Freak’s most ambitious non-Pokémon project to date. While the studio has previously experimented with smaller original titles, this is the first time it has committed to a large-scale action RPG designed for modern high-end platforms.
The decision to release the game on PlayStation, Xbox and PC is unusual for a developer so closely associated with Nintendo. It reflects a shift in strategy, positioning the studio within the wider console and PC market and allowing it to compete directly with other action-focused RPGs.
The gameplay footage shown during the presentation highlighted fast-paced sword combat, detailed environments and a darker tone than fans may expect from the developer. The game has already drawn comparisons to titles such as Sekiro and Nier, suggesting a greater emphasis on precise combat and atmospheric storytelling.
Game Freak has not yet shared information on the size of the development team or budget, but the project’s scope suggests a substantial investment. The studio appears keen to establish Beast of Reincarnation as a new original franchise rather than a one-off experiment.
Setting, story and gameplay
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Japan in the year 4046. According to the developers, the world has been devastated by a mysterious blight that infects all forms of life, transforming them into hostile creatures known as malefacts.
Players take on the role of Emma, a young woman with unique abilities that allow her to manipulate plant life. These powers are used both in combat and exploration, enabling players to navigate dangerous landscapes and overcome environmental obstacles.
Emma is accompanied by a dog named Koo, who plays a central role throughout the game. Koo assists in battles and exploration, responding to commands issued by the player while Emma engages enemies directly with real-time, sword-based combat.
Director Kota Furushima explained how the combat system blends action and command mechanics. “The command menu for Koo can be opened at any time, allowing players to move seamlessly between action and command-based combat. Through this flow, Koo’s presence is constantly felt by your side,” he said.
Parrying enemy attacks is a key mechanic, rewarding players with points that can be spent on activating Koo’s abilities. This system is designed to encourage careful timing and coordination between the two characters, reinforcing the bond implied by the game’s core concept.
Platforms, release window and availability
Beast of Reincarnation is scheduled to launch in summer 2026, although Game Freak has not yet announced a specific release date. The game will be available simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC.
Xbox confirmed that the title will be included in Xbox Game Pass from day one, potentially significantly broadening its reach at launch. No pricing details have been shared so far, and it remains unclear whether additional editions or downloadable content are planned.
The announcement has generated interest among players curious to see how Game Freak applies its design experience to a darker, more action-driven genre. Industry observers will be watching closely to see whether the studio can successfully establish a new identity beyond Pokemon.
With more than a year to go before release, Game Freak is expected to share further updates, including extended gameplay demonstrations and story details. For now, Beast of Reincarnation represents one of the studio’s most significant and closely watched projects in recent years.
