Apple Cash introduces virtual card numbers for secure online shopping

Apple Cash introduces virtual card numbers for enhanced security and expanded online shopping capabilities.

In a bid to enhance security and expand usability, Apple Cash is rolling out a new feature: virtual card numbers for online shopping. This addition, currently in the iOS 17.4 beta, aims to facilitate transactions where Apple Pay isn’t available, providing users with a fresh security code for each purchase.

Enhanced security for online transactions

Apple Cash users will now have the option to generate a “virtual card number” within the iOS 17.4 beta. This feature ensures heightened security by assigning a unique number for each transaction. Accessible via Safari’s Autofill, the virtual card number simplifies the online shopping experience, offering convenience and peace of mind. With a dedicated security code for every purchase, users can rest assured that their financial information remains protected. Moreover, the encryption measures implemented by Apple bolster the security of these virtual card numbers, making them a reliable option for online transactions.

Simple setup and accessibility

Setting up the virtual card number is straightforward within the iOS 17.4 beta. Once activated, users can easily access the card details, including the card number, expiration date, and security code, through the settings menu. Notably, this number operates separately from the one used for Apple Pay transactions, providing an added layer of security. Additionally, users can change the virtual card number as needed, enhancing control over their online transactions. This user-friendly feature streamlines the process of online shopping, making it more accessible to Apple Cash users. By integrating seamlessly with Safari’s Autofill, Apple ensures users a smooth and hassle-free experience when making online purchases.

Expanding Apple Cash’s reach

With approximately 15 percent of retailers still not accepting Apple Pay, introducing virtual card numbers opens up new avenues for Apple Cash users. Previously, the absence of a card number hindered online usage. However, with this innovative feature, users can utilise Apple Cash on a wider range of websites, bridging the gap between online shopping and the convenience of Apple Pay. By expanding its reach in the digital marketplace, Apple Cash enhances its value proposition for users seeking secure and convenient payment solutions. This move aligns with Apple’s commitment to providing innovative solutions that cater to the evolving needs of its user base.

Apple Cash, a debit card-like product, facilitates money transfers via Apple Pay and the Message app. Users can store funds and link their accounts to a bank or debit card for seamless transactions. Furthermore, earnings from Apple Pay cashback are deposited into Apple Cash, offering a convenient means to settle Apple Pay balances.

Since transitioning from the Discover Network to Visa in 2022, Apple Cash has continually evolved to meet its users’ changing needs. Introducing virtual card numbers marks another significant step in enhancing security and expanding accessibility within the Apple Cash ecosystem.
