Facebook adds passkey login for faster and safer access

Facebook's mobile app now supports passkeys, offering users a faster and safer way to log in using face ID, fingerprints, or PINs.

Facebook is rolling out passkey support on its mobile app to make logins smoother and more secure. Whether you’re using an iPhone or Android device, you can soon sign in to Facebook using your face, fingerprint, or device PIN—no password or SMS code needed.

What are passkeys, and how do they work?

If you’re new to passkeys, don’t worry—it’s quite straightforward. A passkey is a modern way to log in to apps and websites without a password. Instead, you use the same method you already rely on to unlock your phone or tablet. That might be a Face ID, a fingerprint scan, or a numeric PIN.

This technology comes from the FIDO Alliance, a group focused on creating better and safer ways to log in. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is a member of this group and is now using passkeys to boost security.

When you create a Facebook passkey, it’s stored safely on your device. It can’t be stolen in a data breach or tricked through phishing. Since it stays on your device and never gets shared, it offers much more protection than traditional login methods.

Why Facebook is embracing passkeys now

Meta has already started using passkeys with other services. It first introduced the feature on Android devices in 2023, followed by support for iOS in 2024. With both major mobile platforms covered, the company is bringing this secure login method to the Facebook app.

Once you’ve set up your passkey, you can use it to do more than log into your account. It also works with Meta Pay to autofill payment details securely and access Messenger. Plus, it will help protect your encrypted message backups, offering extra peace of mind for your private chats.

Meta has confirmed that full passkey support for Messenger will roll out in the coming months, making it even easier to stay connected without compromising your security.

A growing trend across tech

Facebook isn’t the only one moving towards a password-free future. Other tech giants like Apple, Google, Amazon, and TikTok have already added passkey support to their services. Passkey support is a growing trend in the digital world, and it’s all about improving safety and user experience.

Passwords have long been a weak link in online security. They’re often reused, easy to guess, or forgotten. Passkeys remove that problem by linking your login to something you can access—your own device.

If you’re ready to make the switch, you’ll soon be able to set up a passkey directly within the Facebook app. It’s a small change, but one that could make your digital life simpler and safer.
