GoTo completes major cloud migration to Alibaba Cloud to support Indonesia’s digital finance future

GoTo Financial completes cloud migration to Alibaba Cloud in Jakarta, boosting scalability, efficiency and data sovereignty compliance.

GoTo Group has completed the migration of its digital finance arm, GoTo Financial, to Alibaba Cloud’s infrastructure in Jakarta. The move, announced on 6 June, is part of a broader strategic partnership formed in September 2024 between the two firms. It marks a major milestone in one of Indonesia’s largest and most technically complex cloud migration projects.

The transition is expected to improve service efficiency, lower costs, and provide better support for GoTo Financial’s more than 20 million monthly transacting users. It also aligns with Indonesia’s data sovereignty requirements, ensuring all user data remains within the country.

Improved scalability and operational resilience

GoTo Financial, known for its digital payment solution GoPay, now runs entirely on Alibaba Cloud’s secure, high-performance infrastructure. This shift is set to enhance the company’s ability to manage a high volume of transactions while maintaining system stability.

Patrick Walujo, CEO of GoTo Group, said: “By completing this migration with Alibaba Cloud, we’ve strengthened the core infrastructure that underpins GoTo Financial’s services. The transition also reinforces our commitment to Indonesia’s data sovereignty, with all data being held within Indonesia. As a result of this, our Company is now well positioned for the future as we continue to support millions of Indonesians with trusted, homegrown financial solutions.”

The technical teams from both companies collaborated closely to design a full-stack solution. This included the deployment of thousands of microservices using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), made possible through Alibaba Cloud’s proprietary tools such as Landing Zone and Terraform. The architecture used a “dual-core” approach to gradually shift traffic over, ensuring there was no service disruption during the process.

Building a foundation for growth and innovation

The migration has also set the stage for future innovation, both in infrastructure and talent development. In addition to migrating applications and systems, the two companies are working to support digital talent in Indonesia.

In May 2025, Alibaba Cloud partnered with GoTo and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) to host the Alibaba Cloud GenAI Hackathon. The initiative aimed to strengthen local digital capabilities and drive long-term economic development through emerging technologies.

Sean Yuan, Regional General Manager for South Pacific and Japan at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, commented: “This successful migration shows how Alibaba Cloud’s technologies can support large-scale digital transformation. We’re proud to work with GoTo in shaping Indonesia’s digital future and look forward to deepening our partnership.”

Expanding the strategic partnership

GoTo and Alibaba Cloud first formalised their strategic collaboration in 2024. Since then, Alibaba Cloud has become a key player in supporting GoTo’s technology roadmap. With three data centres in Indonesia and a broad portfolio of services across computing, container, database, networking, and security, Alibaba Cloud has enabled GoTo to scale up efficiently.

The companies plan to expand their partnership further with new commercial projects aimed at supporting Indonesian enterprises and accelerating the country’s digital economy.

GoTo Group’s senior leadership also visited Alibaba’s Xixi Campus in China recently, reaffirming their commitment to shared innovation and long-term cooperation.
