Nintendo Switch 2 launching globally on June 5, Southeast Asia release set for Q3 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch globally on June 5 and cost US$449.99. Southeast Asia will receive it in Q3 2025, along with eShop support.

After years of speculation, Nintendo has officially announced the release date and key features of the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The next-generation console will launch worldwide on June 5, with a starting price of US$449.99 (S$600), a US$150 increase over the original Switch’s launch price. In Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines, the console is set to arrive between July and September 2025.

Upgraded hardware and new features

Nintendo’s latest console significantly improves on its predecessor. The Switch 2 features a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support. However, these enhancements will only be available in compatible games. The Joy-Con 2 controllers have also been redesigned, introducing mouse controls for better precision.

Storage has been expanded to 256GB of internal memory. Unlike the original Switch, which used standard microSD cards, the Switch 2 will support new microSD Express cards for external storage. Unfortunately, older microSD cards will not be compatible.

The audio experience is also getting an upgrade. The console includes improved speakers and 3D spatial audio for headphones, with plans to extend this feature to built-in speakers through a future system update. Other additions include two USB-C ports, a more durable and adjustable kickstand, and a built-in microphone.

GameChat and online expansion

One of the most exciting new features is GameChat, a voice and video chat system similar to Discord. This service will allow Switch 2 users to communicate even while playing different games. GameChat will require an internet connection and a Nintendo Online membership, but Nintendo has confirmed that it will be free until March 31, 2026.

There is more good news for Southeast Asian players. Nintendo Southeast Asia (SEA) has revealed plans to introduce the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online membership in the region. This will be a major step forward, as these services have been unavailable in Southeast Asia since the launch of the original Switch eight years ago.

With its upgraded hardware, improved controllers, and expanded online capabilities, the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be a significant leap forward for Nintendo fans. As gamers worldwide prepare for the June 5 launch, those in Southeast Asia can look forward to its arrival in the third quarter of 2025.
