OPPO meets carbon peak target two years early in latest sustainability report

OPPO’s 2024 Sustainability Report highlights early carbon peak, eco-friendly packaging, and AI innovation in health and accessibility.

OPPO has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, announcing that it reached peak carbon emissions in 2022, two years ahead of its original climate target. The announcement was made on 5 June to mark the 54th World Environment Day. This is the fifth consecutive year the global technology firm has published a sustainability report.

Operating in over 70 markets and ranking as the world’s fourth largest smartphone brand for four years running, OPPO outlined its progress in five key areas: innovation, environmental protection, ecosystem engagement, operations and compliance, and employee welfare. The company said it remains committed to driving sustainability forward through its brand platform, “Make Your Moment”.

Progress in cutting emissions and packaging waste

OPPO had previously set a goal to reach carbon peak by 2024 and carbon neutrality across its operations by 2050. Through a range of initiatives, the company managed to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 3.2% year-on-year in 2024, equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of about 514,320 mature trees. It also recorded a 9.3% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by mobilising its supply chain partners.

The firm has also introduced greener practices across the entire lifecycle of its products. In 2024, it implemented lightweight packaging for all smartphone models, cutting paper usage by around 10 tonnes per million units. This is estimated to save approximately 200 trees. It also increased the use of recycled materials such as sugarcane and bamboo, and raised the recycled content in packaging in Europe from 45% to 55%.

Durability and design have also been improved. The OPPO A3 Pro, for instance, now features a 360-degree Damage-proof Armour Body that enhances drop resistance for daily use.

Advancing accessibility and health innovation

Innovation continues to be a core part of OPPO’s sustainability strategy. The company has filed more than 113,000 patent applications globally, with 91% being invention patents. OPPO also added over 100 AI features across its entire smartphone range in 2024, reaching 50 million users. These include accessibility tools such as real-time speech-to-text, content magnification, and adaptive colour correction, aimed at helping users with visual or hearing impairments.

In the health space, OPPO has introduced features such as the “Health Insights” toolkit on its smartwatches. These use sensor data and AI algorithms to track heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, and sleep. A key innovation is an AI-based blood pressure classification system that allows for continuous, unobtrusive risk assessment, especially for younger users with hypertension. According to the company, this project is the world’s largest real-world study on blood pressure risk prediction of its kind.

Supporting communities through education and sport

In 2024, OPPO donated over 450 million RMB to community causes in areas such as the environment, education, culture, and sport. One of its key initiatives was “Culture in a Shot”, a collaboration with the Discovery Channel that highlights cultural heritage and celebrations across 15 countries. Under the 2024 theme “Portraits of Legacy” and the 2025 edition “Celebrate the Moment”, the initiative aims to preserve and share diverse traditions through visual storytelling.

OPPO also partnered with UNESCO to donate 1,000 tablets, supporting youth education in Africa and Asia. In sport, the company has continued its partnership with the UEFA Champions League as the official smartphone partner. Through this role, it has supported football development by renovating pitches, providing equipment, and offering professional training to young players in countries such as Brazil, Egypt and Mexico.

OPPO said it remains focused on creating a sustainable ecosystem through innovation and partnerships. More details can be found in its full 2024 Sustainability Report.
