Apple announces AirPods Max 2 with improved noise cancellation and H2 chip
Apple unveils AirPods Max 2 with an H2 chip, improved noise cancellation, adaptive audio features, and a US$549 price, ahead of an April release.
Apple has announced the AirPods Max 2, the first major upgrade to its over-ear wireless headphones since the original model launched in 2020. The company said the new headphones will go on pre-order on 25 March and begin shipping in early April.

At first glance, the new model looks almost identical to its predecessor. The AirPods Max 2 retains the same large aluminium earcups and mesh headband design, along with the colourful finishes that have become a signature of the product line. However, Apple says the most significant changes are internal, centred on a new processor and updated audio technology.
The most notable addition is Apple’s H2 chip, which previously debuted in the AirPods Pro 2. According to the company, the chip enables a range of new capabilities, including improved noise cancellation, enhanced spatial audio, and additional smart features that adapt to the user’s environment.
Improved noise cancellation and audio performance
Apple says the AirPods Max 2 deliver significantly better noise reduction compared with the original model. The company claims the combination of the H2 chip and improved audio algorithms makes the headphones 1.5 times more effective at blocking unwanted background noise.
Active noise cancellation has been one of the defining features of the AirPods Max since its debut, and Apple is strengthening that capability in the second-generation model. The improved processing power allows the headphones to analyse surrounding sound more quickly and respond with greater precision, helping to reduce distractions in busy environments such as public transport or offices.
The company has also introduced a new internal amplifier intended to improve overall audio clarity. Apple says the change will produce cleaner sound reproduction, particularly at higher volumes, and will also improve spatial audio performance. Spatial audio creates a surround-like listening experience by placing sound around the listener, and Apple has been steadily refining the feature across its audio products.
For users who want the highest possible audio quality, Apple says the AirPods Max 2 will support lossless audio when connected with the included USB-C cable. This option allows listeners to enjoy music without compression, provided they are using compatible content sources.
New adaptive and intelligent features
Alongside hardware upgrades, the AirPods Max 2 introduce several software-driven features powered by the H2 chip. One of the most prominent additions is the “Adaptive Audio” mode.
Apple describes Adaptive Audio as a system that dynamically balances transparency mode and active noise cancellation depending on the user’s surroundings. In practice, this means the headphones can allow important sounds through, such as announcements or nearby voices, while still reducing general background noise.
Another feature, called “Conversation Awareness,” aims to make interactions feel more natural while wearing the headphones. When the system detects that the user is speaking, it automatically lowers the volume of the music or audio content. It increases transparency so the user can hear the other person more clearly. Once the conversation ends, the headphones gradually return to their previous listening settings.
Apple is also adding live translation support to the AirPods Max 2. The feature works in combination with an iPhone, using the headphones to translate spoken language in real time. Incoming speech can be translated into the listener’s preferred language, while the user’s own responses can be translated back for the other speaker. Apple has been gradually integrating translation features into its ecosystem, and the company says the headphones extend this capability into everyday conversations.
These additions mean the AirPods Max 2 now include many of the same smart features found in the latest AirPods Pro models, but in a full-size over-ear form factor.
Premium price remains unchanged
Despite the new technology, Apple has kept the price of the AirPods Max 2 unchanged. The headphones will continue to sell for US$549, placing them well above many competing wireless headphones.
The high price has long been one of the biggest criticisms of the AirPods Max. While the original model received praise for its sound quality and build materials, many reviewers noted that the ageing feature set and premium cost made it difficult to recommend in later years as rival brands introduced more advanced alternatives at lower prices.
The release of the AirPods Max 2 may address some of those concerns. The addition of the H2 chip brings the product closer in line with Apple’s latest audio devices and significantly expands its feature set. Improvements to noise cancellation, spatial audio and adaptive listening modes are likely to be key selling points for users already invested in Apple’s ecosystem.
The new model also arrives after several years of minimal updates to the product line. Apple refreshed the AirPods Max in 2024 by adding a USB-C port and introducing new colour options, but the internal hardware remained largely unchanged. Many observers viewed that update as a stopgap while waiting for a more substantial redesign.
With the AirPods Max 2, Apple is delivering the upgrade that many users expected earlier. Whether the improvements are enough to justify the premium price will likely depend on how much value buyers place on Apple’s integrated ecosystem and its expanding range of intelligent audio features.
