Apple may use a liquid metal hinge for its rumoured foldable iPhone

Apple may use a liquid metal hinge for its foldable iPhone to improve durability and reduce creases. The device could launch by 2027.

Apple is reportedly considering a liquid metal hinge for its much-anticipated foldable iPhone. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the move aims to improve durability, enhance screen flatness, and reduce crease marks on the display.

A major shift in Apple’s use of liquid metal

Apple has used liquid metal in its products, but only for small components like SIM ejector pins. If the rumoured foldable iPhone features a liquid metal hinge, it will be the first time Apple has used this material for a critical mechanical component.

Kuo claims that Apple plans to manufacture the hinge using a die-casting process. This approach is expected to provide a more durable and seamless folding experience, setting it apart from other foldable smartphones on the market.

How Apple’s hinge compares to existing foldable phones

Many foldable phones use metal for their hinges, but Apple’s approach could bring something new. For instance, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a hinge made from multi-alloy steel and aerospace-grade aluminium alloy. OPPO’s Find N5 has a titanium flexion hinge with Grade 5 titanium alloy for its cover and wing plates and OPPO-customised ultra-high-strength steel for the load-bearing parts. Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 uses Enhanced Armour Aluminium for its hinge.

Apple’s decision to explore liquid metal suggests the company focuses on long-term durability and design refinement. Liquid metal is known for its high strength, corrosion resistance, and ability to be moulded with extreme precision, making it an excellent choice for a foldable device hinge.

What to expect from Apple’s foldable iPhone

Reports indicate that Apple’s foldable iPhone will have a book-style design, with a 7.8-inch main display that is free of creases and a 5.5-inch cover display. Other expected features include a Touch ID power button, a dual-camera module, and a titanium alloy chassis.

The launch date of the foldable iPhone is rumoured to be late 2026 or early 2027. While Apple has yet to confirm these details, its approach to hinge technology suggests it is working on a product that could redefine the foldable smartphone market.
