Google’s latest updates simplify your outing plans

Google Maps and Search's new updates, including AI itineraries and curated recommendations, offer a streamlined way to plan your outings.

If you’ve ever felt the pressure of organising a trip or a simple night out, Google’s latest suite of updates to Maps and Search might just be the helping hand you need. These enhancements are designed to streamline your planning process, introducing everything from new translation features to AI-powered trip itineraries and expert-curated recommendations. Let’s dive into how these updates are set to make your life a bit easier.

Explore with ease: Curated recommendations on Google Maps

Kicking off in over 40 cities across the US and Canada, Google Maps is rolling out a feature that’s about to change the way you discover places. You’ll now be greeted with lists of recommendations for dining and sightseeing spots. Thanks to Google’s algorithm, you’ll have access to a “Trending” list updated weekly with spots gaining popularity, a “Top” list of consistently popular destinations, and a “Gems” list highlighting those hidden treasures worth checking out.

But that’s not all. Google Maps doesn’t just rely on its algorithms. It also pulls in lists from reputable sources like Lonely Planet, The New York Times, The Infatuation, and OpenTable, giving you a variety of perspectives on where to go next.

Trip planning reimagined with AI

In an exciting move, Google Search is testing a new generative AI feature that takes the guesswork out of trip planning. When looking for trip ideas, this tool generates a sample itinerary complete with flight and hotel options, local attractions, and dining recommendations. What sets this apart is the integration of additional information for each recommended spot, including business details, reviews, and photos. Plus, if you find the itinerary to your liking, you can easily export it to Gmail, Docs, or Maps. This feature, however, is currently available exclusively to users who sign up for Google’s free Search Generative Experience.

Introduced earlier this year, the Circle to Search feature is getting a significant upgrade with new translation capabilities. Imagine being able to translate anything on your screen, from online menus to local event pages, with a simple long press of the home button or navigation bar and a tap on the translate icon. This functionality is a game-changer for travellers and locals alike, facilitating easier understanding and interaction with foreign languages.

Initially available on the Pixel 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Circle to Search is expanding its reach to more Android devices. The translation feature, set to make communication smoother, is expected to be available in the coming weeks.

These updates from Google are poised to transform how we plan our outings, offering more intuitive and personalised experiences. Whether exploring your city or planning a vacation abroad, these new features promise to reduce the hassle and increase the enjoyment of your adventures.
