Hitachi Vantara ranks highest in energy-efficient storage solutions

Hitachi Vantara’s Virtual Storage Platform One Block leads the industry with top ENERGY STAR rankings for energy-efficient storage solutions.

Hitachi Vantara has achieved a significant milestone in the storage industry, securing the top three positions in ENERGY STAR ratings for energy-efficient storage solutions. The company’s recently launched Virtual Storage Platform One Block has been recognised for its outstanding energy performance, earning the highest rank in the ENERGY STAR NVSS Disk Online 4 category. This achievement not only highlights the platform’s performance but also aligns with Hitachi Vantara’s long-standing commitment to sustainability.

Virtual Storage Platform One Block leads in energy efficiency

Hitachi Vantara’s Virtual Storage Platform One Block, specifically the Block 28 model, took the top spot with an impressive 538 IOPS (input/output operations per second) per Watt. Following closely behind are the Block 26 model with 409 IOPS per Watt and the E1090 model at 368 IOPS per Watt. These figures showcase the company’s success in offering high-performance storage solutions that are also energy-efficient.

The ENERGY STAR certification process measures storage efficiency based on how well systems handle input/output operations relative to energy consumption. Hitachi Vantara’s rankings demonstrate its leadership in balancing performance with environmental responsibility. This recognition comes at a time when businesses are increasingly focused on reducing their carbon footprints while maintaining the reliability of their operations.

A recent survey shows that 68% of IT decision-makers are concerned about how artificial intelligence and machine learning affect their energy use and carbon footprint. Furthermore, 77% believe outdated data infrastructures hinder sustainability efforts. Hitachi Vantara’s top-rated solutions offer businesses a way to address these concerns.

Meeting sustainability goals with innovative solutions

Hitachi Vantara’s Chief Product Officer, Octavian Tanase, stated, “At Hitachi Vantara, we understand the growing importance of energy efficiency in today’s data-driven world, and we are committed to helping our customers meet their performance needs while also reducing their environmental impact.” He further highlighted how the Virtual Storage Platform One Block storage appliance is designed to meet the future needs of the industry by offering eco-friendly, high-performance solutions.

Virtual Storage Platform One not only improves storage performance but also allows organisations to consolidate workloads onto fewer systems. This consolidation results in greater operational efficiency while reducing the overall environmental footprint, making it an ideal choice for businesses aiming to create greener data centres.

The platform also features Dynamic Carbon Reduction technology, which helps save energy by automatically switching CPUs into eco-mode during periods of low activity. Additionally, its “always-on compression” technology optimises energy consumption by switching between inline data reduction and post-processing, leading to a 30-40% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Hitachi Vantara’s commitment to sustainability

Hitachi Vantara’s focus on sustainability is evident across its product offerings. All of its storage arrays are certified by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organisation (SuMPO) under the Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP) certification. This certification ensures that greenhouse gas emissions are measured and verified by third-party auditors, adding transparency to their environmental impact.

The company’s storage solutions have also received ENERGY STAR certification, reinforcing their energy-efficient design. Additionally, Hitachi Vantara earned a Gold Medal rating from EcoVadis, a globally recognised organisation that evaluates corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

For over a decade, Hitachi Vantara has worked to lower its carbon footprint throughout the entire lifecycle of its storage arrays, from material procurement to production, logistics, usage, and recycling. By continuing to pursue certifications like CFP and ENERGY STAR, the company reaffirms its dedication to sustainability and innovation.
