OpenAI may soon let you sign in to other apps using your ChatGPT account

OpenAI may soon let you sign in to third-party apps using your ChatGPT account, a move that could rival Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

OpenAI could soon make it easier to log in to your favourite apps using your ChatGPT account. The company recently shared a new web page, published on May 28, inviting developers to explore this new option. If the feature is launched, you can use your ChatGPT login details to access other services online — much like you currently do with Apple, Google, or Microsoft accounts.

This new feature is being called “Sign in with ChatGPT.” It’s still in the early stages, but OpenAI is already testing it with developers to see how it could work in real-world apps. If successful, it could place ChatGPT alongside some of the biggest names in tech, especially as ChatGPT already has a massive user base of around 600 million monthly active users.

OpenAI tests the new sign-in with developers

OpenAI has already launched a preview version of this feature in its Codex CLI tool, an open-source coding assistant for terminal users. If you’re a developer using Codex CLI, you may have had a chance to connect your ChatGPT account to your OpenAI API profile. Whether using the Free, Plus, or Pro plan, the company made it easy to try out the connection.

To encourage developers to get involved, OpenAI even offered incentives. If you’re a Plus user, you could receive US$5 in API credits just for signing in with your ChatGPT account. As a Pro user, you could get a much larger bonus — up to US$50 in API credits. These rewards indicate that OpenAI is keen to get as many developers testing the system as possible.

The developer sign-up form asks for various information, including the number of weekly users your app has. Whether your app has fewer than 1,000 users or more than 100 million, OpenAI wants to hear from you. They also ask how you charge for AI tools and whether you already use OpenAI’s APIs.

ChatGPT expands beyond chat

This move suggests OpenAI wants ChatGPT to be more than just a chatbot. By allowing users to use their Chatgpt accounts across different apps, the company may build a larger platform that includes social media, shopping, and personal devices.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, mentioned back in 2023 that the company was thinking about a “Sign in with OpenAI” feature, possibly coming in 2024. Halfway through 2025, it looks like the idea is being taken seriously.

There’s still no word on when the feature will be ready for public use or which companies might be working with OpenAI to roll it out. But if things go as planned, you might soon see “Sign in with ChatGPT” as a login option on apps you use daily.

For now, it’s a waiting game. However, OpenAI’s growing influence and user base could help it become a key player in the world of online logins, right alongside the tech giants.
