Rumoured Xbox console could arrive in 2026 alongside Call of Duty release

A new Xbox console, rumoured as "Xbox Prime," might launch in 2026 with Call of Duty. Here’s the latest on what to expect.

Rumours are swirling about the potential release of a new Xbox console in 2026, tentatively called “Xbox Prime.” According to a Call of Duty leaker known as TheGhostOfHope, the next-generation console could arrive alongside Infinity Ward’s latest Call of Duty game. While “Xbox Prime” might only be a codename, the speculation has generated excitement among gamers.

A leap forward in gaming technology

The upcoming Xbox is rumoured to feature significant technological upgrades, including advanced graphics, improved cloud gaming capabilities, and enhanced artificial intelligence. These details align with information revealed during Microsoft’s court battle with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has cautioned that some of the leaked details from the case are outdated.

Interestingly, the leaker also hinted at a possible Xbox handheld device following the new console. While there’s no clear timeline, it ties into Microsoft’s growing interest in handheld gaming. This trend is already gaining traction with devices like the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally.

A shorter console cycle?

Typically, console generations last around seven to eight years, with the Xbox Series X|S launching in 2020. A 2026 release for the next Xbox would mean a shorter-than-usual cycle. However, these rumours have sparked mixed responses. Jez Corden, a known Microsoft insider, dismissed the claims about a 2026 launch as “not true,” adding a layer of uncertainty to the speculation.

Despite the conflicting reports, Microsoft is preparing for a significant moment in gaming history. The company plans to celebrate Xbox and Halo’s 25th anniversary in 2026, which could be the perfect stage for major announcements about its gaming future.

What’s next for Xbox?

While official details remain scarce, Phil Spencer recently confirmed that Microsoft is exploring handheld gaming options. Prototypes are reportedly in the works, though no launch date has been mentioned. This move reflects the company’s ambition to diversify its gaming offerings and cater to the growing demand for portable gaming experiences.

All eyes are on Microsoft as fans eagerly await confirmation about the next console. If the rumours hold, 2026 could mark a pivotal year for Xbox, especially with the potential launch of a major Call of Duty title.
