AMD and OpenAI have announced a multi-year strategic partnership to deploy six gigawatts of AMD GPUs, significantly expanding the computing capacity that powers OpenAI’s advanced artificial intelligence models. The agreement positions AMD as a core technology partner for OpenAI and sets out a roadmap for scaling hardware and software collaboration across multiple GPU generations.
The first phase will see OpenAI begin deploying one gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026. This move builds on earlier work between the two companies, which started with AMD’s MI300X series and continued with the MI350X range. The partnership aims to support the rapid growth of AI workloads by combining AMD’s leadership in high-performance computing with OpenAI’s cutting-edge research.
Deepening multi-generational collaboration
As part of the agreement, AMD and OpenAI will share technical expertise to refine future product development and create infrastructure designed for large-scale AI deployment. The collaboration will extend beyond hardware to include optimisations at the rack scale, ensuring systems can handle increasingly complex models.
The companies have also structured a financial alignment to reflect their long-term collaboration. AMD has granted OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million AMD shares, tied to the scale of GPU deployments and the achievement of technical and commercial milestones. The first tranche will vest when OpenAI begins its initial one-gigawatt buildout, with additional tranches linked to growth towards six gigawatts and AMD meeting set share price goals.
Dr Lisa Su, chair and CEO of AMD, said the partnership will accelerate global AI adoption. “We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale. This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem,” she said.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the significance of the deal. “This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realise AI’s full potential. AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster,” he said.
Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, added that close collaboration across the technology stack will be key to AI’s future. “Working alongside AMD will allow us to scale to deliver AI tools that benefit people everywhere.”
Economic impact and AI ecosystem growth
The deal is expected to create major financial benefits for AMD. Jean Hu, AMD’s executive vice president, CFO and treasurer, said the agreement could generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue while strengthening the company’s position in the AI market. “This agreement creates significant strategic alignment and shareholder value for both AMD and OpenAI and is expected to be highly accretive to AMD’s non-GAAP earnings-per-share,” she said.
The partnership signals a strong push to expand global AI infrastructure at a time when demand for advanced computing is rising sharply. By working together, AMD and OpenAI aim to deliver reliable, scalable hardware solutions that enable faster development of AI models and support the wider ecosystem.
