Coursera partners with OpenAI to make trusted learning content available in ChatGPT

Coursera joins OpenAI’s first generation of ChatGPT apps, making trusted learning content accessible to millions of users worldwide.

Coursera has announced it is among the first generation of apps integrated into OpenAI’s ChatGPT, marking a milestone in online education. The partnership, revealed at OpenAI’s DevDay, is the first time an online learning platform has been directly embedded in ChatGPT. It aims to make verified, high-quality educational resources easily accessible to hundreds of millions of users worldwide.

Expanding access to education through AI

ChatGPT is widely used as a tool for learning, with more than 800 million people turning to it weekly to seek information and develop new skills. By partnering with OpenAI, Coursera will bring its educational videos and trusted content directly into ChatGPT conversations. Users can now ask for the Coursera app by name or be prompted by ChatGPT when it identifies that relevant Coursera resources could enhance a discussion. This integration is designed to transform casual questions into more structured, interactive learning experiences.

“This partnership reflects Coursera and OpenAI’s shared commitment to expanding access to education and helping people everywhere learn, grow, and thrive,” said Greg Hart, CEO of Coursera. “By putting trusted, verified learning into the hands of hundreds of millions of people, we can help them gain the skills they need to pursue economic opportunity and prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Enabling more personalised and practical learning

OpenAI sees the collaboration as a way to make AI-driven learning more effective and reliable. “ChatGPT is quickly becoming one of the go-to tools for people who want to learn something new. But the most powerful learning experiences happen when human expertise and AI work together,” said Leah Belsky, Vice President of Education at OpenAI. “By bringing the expertise of world-class educators and institutions within Coursera into ChatGPT, learners can more easily find trusted content, build job-ready skills, move their careers forward, and unlock new opportunities.”

The app has been built on OpenAI’s Apps SDK and represents an important step in scaling high-quality education. By placing Coursera’s content inside ChatGPT, learners can move from curiosity to professional-level skills faster and with greater confidence.

Availability and future development

Coursera is the first online learning platform to join OpenAI’s new generation of apps for ChatGPT and one of the first partners overall. The app is now available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. It launches in English, with video subtitles and dubbing in select languages to follow. Both companies say they will continue exploring new ways to use generative AI to make learning more personal, interactive, and scalable.

To try the Coursera app, users can visit the Apps section in ChatGPT or simply ask for it during a conversation.
