Apple is set to roll out significant upgrades for Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 owners with the release of iOS 26 on 15 September. The update will enhance the earbuds’ heart rate tracking and deliver closer integration with Apple’s Fitness app, easing concerns for users who felt left behind following the recent launch of AirPods Pro 3.
First introduced in February, the second-generation Powerbeats Pro now gains more advanced health and workout functions through the new software. Users will be able to choose from up to 50 workout types in the Fitness app, with the earbuds providing more accurate data. Fitness+ subscribers will also benefit from real-time updates showing heart rate, calories burned, and “Burn Bar” metrics while exercising.
Enhanced tracking and usability
Beyond workout features, iOS 26 introduces several quality-of-life improvements for Powerbeats Pro 2. The update allows heart rate monitoring with just one earbud, offers more reliable step counting even when the paired iPhone is not nearby, and uses a new algorithm that delivers faster and more precise heart rate readings.
Apple has also added smart alerts designed to improve the accuracy of health tracking. If the earbuds detect a poor fit, users will receive a notification encouraging them to adjust their positioning. Another new feature enables the headphones to recognise head movements, such as nodding or shaking, to respond to Siri prompts for calls or messages.
Bringing Powerbeats Pro 2 closer to AirPods Pro 3
The improvements arriving with iOS 26 will align the Powerbeats Pro 2 more closely with the features offered by the AirPods Pro 3. While the update delivers a welcome boost in health tracking and smart functions, some limitations remain. Reviews have noted that the earbuds still fall short in terms of active noise cancellation compared to other premium options.
It is also important to note that the new features are largely exclusive to Apple’s ecosystem. Android users with Powerbeats Pro 2 will not have access to most of the upgrades tied to iOS 26, leaving them with fewer enhancements than iPhone owners.
The release marks a significant step in Apple’s ongoing effort to expand the functionality of its audio devices beyond music, blending fitness tracking and smart usability features for a more versatile experience.
