Apple may add a second front-facing camera to the next iPad Pro

Apple may launch a new iPad Pro with two front-facing cameras and an M5 chip, improving usability in both landscape and portrait modes.

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new version of the iPad Pro that will feature two front-facing cameras, allowing users to enjoy both portrait and landscape modes with ease. The update, revealed in a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, suggests that Apple intends to enhance user experience by placing an additional camera at the top edge of the device. This will be in addition to the camera introduced along the long edge of the iPad Pro in last year’s model.

If confirmed, the feature will likely appeal to users who switch between holding the iPad vertically and horizontally, especially when making video calls, taking selfies, or using Face ID. The move forms part of Apple’s broader strategy to refine its high-end tablet range and offer more versatility in the way people use the device.

Improved usability for landscape and portrait users

In the previous iPad Pro generation, Apple made a notable change by relocating the front-facing camera to the long side of the tablet. This alteration catered to those who often use the iPad in a horizontal or landscape position—such as when using a keyboard or watching videos—by aligning the camera more naturally with the user’s line of sight.

The introduction of a second camera would build on this change by enabling the device to work just as effectively in portrait orientation. This improvement means users would no longer have to worry about accidentally blocking the camera with their hand or awkwardly rotating the tablet to find the optimal camera angle.

This dual-camera arrangement could also enhance the reliability of Face ID, allowing the facial recognition system to function more seamlessly regardless of how the iPad is held.

Hardware updates expected alongside camera enhancements

In addition to the new front-facing camera setup, Apple is expected to upgrade the internal components of the iPad Pro, including the addition of its upcoming M5 chip. The M5 chip would mark another step forward in performance and efficiency, further distinguishing the iPad Pro from Apple’s other tablet offerings.

The M5 chip is anticipated to deliver improvements in processing power and energy management, which could be particularly useful for multitasking, creative workflows, and professional applications such as video editing or 3D design. While specific performance benchmarks have not yet been released, the chip is expected to outperform the current M4 and M3 series used in Apple’s computers and tablets.

Possible launch later this year

According to Bloomberg’s earlier reporting, Apple could unveil the new iPad Pro as soon as this autumn. This release is scheduled to precede planned updates to other iPad models, including the standard iPad and the iPad Air, which are expected to receive refreshes by next spring.

Apple has not officially confirmed the launch date or the specifications of the upcoming iPad Pro. However, the reported changes suggest a continued effort to make the iPad Pro a powerful and versatile device that meets the needs of both everyday users and professionals.
