Meta has announced new artificial intelligence tools for Facebook Dating designed to tackle what it calls “swipe fatigue”. The update introduces a chatbot called the “dating assistant” and a feature named “Meet Cute”, both aimed at making it easier for users to connect with potential partners.
The dating assistant operates by responding to user prompts and suggesting matches that align with specific preferences. For example, Meta demonstrated how a user could type “find me a Brooklyn girl in tech” to narrow down their search. The assistant is also able to suggest profile improvements and even provide dating ideas to help people stand out.
According to Meta, the chatbot will be accessible through the Matches tab and is being gradually rolled out in the United States and Canada. The company states that the tool is designed to give users more control over their interactions with the platform and to make online dating less repetitive.
Meet Cute offers weekly match suggestions
The second feature, called Meet Cute, automatically pairs users with a potential match once a week. Meta describes it as “ideal for anyone tired of swiping and is looking for a fresh, easy way to expand their typical pool of dating candidates.”
The idea is not entirely new, as OkCupid experimented with a similar concept in 2013 through its Crazy Blind Date app. However, Meta is presenting Meet Cute as a simplified way of reducing the constant decision-making associated with online dating.
Users will be able to opt out of the feature if they prefer, and Meta has confirmed it is considering offering match recommendations at different intervals beyond the weekly format.
Meta looks to strengthen Facebook’s cultural role
The move is part of Meta’s wider effort to increase Facebook’s cultural relevance. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has previously said he wants the platform to play a stronger role in online life, describing it as a way to be more “culturally influential”.
In addition to Facebook Dating updates, the company has been making changes across its social network. All videos uploaded to Facebook are now converted into reels, as Meta continues to focus on short-form content. The company is also working to reduce spam on the platform, aiming to improve user experience and maintain high engagement levels.
The new AI-driven features in Facebook Dating reflect Meta’s ongoing strategy to combine technology with social connection. By addressing the growing issue of swipe fatigue, the company aims to foster more meaningful interactions while maintaining the competitiveness of its platform in a crowded dating app market.
