Google Photos turns 10 with smart editing tools and easier sharing

Google Photos celebrates 10 years with new AI editing tools and QR code sharing for albums, making your photo experience even smoother.

If you use Google Photos regularly, there’s good news to celebrate. On May 28, Google announced exciting updates to mark the 10th anniversary of its photo app. These updates bring better editing tools and a simpler way to share your pictures with friends and family.

Over the past decade, Google Photos has become a favourite for millions worldwide. It’s easy to use, works well across devices, and keeps your memories safe in the cloud. Now, Google is improving it by adding features powered by artificial intelligence (AI), including a redesigned photo editor and improved sharing options.

A new editor brings smart AI tools to your fingertips

One of the biggest changes is the new editing experience. Google has redesigned the editor with help from its AI assistant, Gemini. You’ll see smart suggestions while editing your photos, saving time and effort.

With this update, the app will simultaneously suggest several effects, blending them to match your desired look. You can even fine-tune the suggestions to match your style more closely. If you’re worried about losing control, don’t be. Google makes tapping on specific parts of your image easy to get tool suggestions for that area. For example, if you tap the background, the app may suggest adjusting the lighting or making it more vibrant.

The update also places your favourite tools — like “Reimagine,” the Pixel 9’s “Autoframe,” and standard options such as brightness and contrast — in one easy-to-reach place. You no longer need to switch screens to find the tools you use most often. Everything is streamlined to help you get your edits done faster and more smoothly.

This improved editor will start rolling out to Android users in June, with iPhone users getting it later in the year. So, if you’re using an Android phone, you’ll be among the first to try these features. iOS users, hang tight — your turn is coming soon.

Sharing is made simple with QR codes

After you’ve polished your photos to perfection, you’ll likely want to share them — and Google is making that easier than ever. The app now lets you create a QR code for any album. This feature is already starting to roll out to users.

When you create a QR code for an album, others can scan it and instantly view your photos. If you allow it, they can even add their own pictures to the same album. This makes it a great option for events like birthdays, holidays, or family get-togethers, where many people might want to see and share images.

Even better, you can print the QR code, hand it out, stick it on a wall, or include it in an event invite. It’s a handy solution for managing a large group and making sharing quick and straightforward.

A strong future ahead for Google Photos

With these updates, Google Photos is a top choice for storing and managing your pictures. The smart editor helps you create better images faster, and the new sharing method eliminates the hassle of links and downloads.

If you want to make the most of Google Photos, it might be time to upgrade your device, too. Using one of the best Android phones—especially models with great cameras—will help you get the highest-quality photos for editing and sharing.

Whether you’re a casual user or a photo enthusiast, these updates will improve your experience. So look for the latest version of Google Photos on your device and get ready to enjoy these new features soon.
