iPhone 13 now supports emergency satellite services with iOS 18.5 update

iPhone 13 gets emergency satellite support with iOS 18.5, plus updates to Mail, Screen Time, Apple TV, and bug fixes across devices.

Apple has expanded one of its most life-saving features to more users. With the release of iOS 18.5 on June 10, you can now access emergency satellite services on your iPhone 13. Previously, these features were only available on the iPhone 14 or newer. If you own an iPhone 13, this update allows you to contact emergency services when you’re out of signal range—no mobile network or Wi-Fi needed.

This update means you can stay connected during emergencies, even in remote areas. Whether hiking through the countryside or driving in a rural location, iOS 18.5 allows your iPhone 13 to send messages via satellite. You can contact emergency services, quickly update your emergency contacts, or request roadside help. It’s the kind of tool you hope never to use, but you’ll be glad to have it if needed.

Satellite emergency service is now available to more iPhones

Until now, satellite-based emergency features were limited to newer models. But with iOS 18.5, your iPhone 13 can now use the same satellite tools that have already helped save lives. Emergency responders have credited this system with helping lost hikers, rescuing people from wildfires, and reaching those in accidents when no other communication was possible.

To check if you can access the feature, go into your iPhone settings, tap “Cellular,” and see if your network supports it. Some networks, like T-Mobile, use Starlink satellite services to offer this connection. So even if you’re far from the nearest mobile tower, you can still call for help. That makes your iPhone an even more powerful tool in an emergency.

This expansion brings peace of mind to many iPhone users who were previously excluded. You don’t need the latest model to benefit from this technology. Apple is making safety more accessible to more people, and this update marks a big step in that direction.

More useful features included in iOS 18.5

While the emergency feature is the highlight of this release, iOS 18.5 includes other helpful improvements you’ll notice in everyday use. If you’re a parent, there’s a new addition to the Screen Time settings. You’ll now be alerted if your child correctly guesses your passcode to access restricted settings. This added notification makes it easier to control what your child can see and do on the device.

The Mail app has also been improved. You can now quickly access all your messages using a new “All Mail” tab, which simplifies email management. Apple has introduced a colourful new Pride wallpaper, which you can apply to brighten your lock screen or home screen. It’s a small update, but one that adds a personal touch.

The Apple TV app also offers a better experience. If you’re using a smart TV or a connected device, it’s now easier to subscribe to new content from the screen. This means you can enjoy shows and films without fiddling with extra steps.

Apple has also addressed several bugs in this release. One fix solves an issue where the Apple Vision Pro app sometimes opens to a black screen when downloaded from the App Store. Other problems involving Siri include enterprise apps not launching properly, and general system errors have also been corrected. These fixes make your iPhone more reliable and smooth to use.

Updates available across all Apple devices

It’s not just your iPhone that benefits from Apple’s latest update. Alongside iOS 18.5, Apple has also rolled out iPadOS 18.5, visionOS 2.5, and watchOS 11.5. If you use a Mac, you’ll find new security-focused updates for macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma. These updates make sure your devices remain secure and stable.

Apple’s latest update shows a strong focus on safety, usability, and reliability. Whether you’re looking for new features or important bug fixes, iOS 18.5 brings improvements that make your iPhone experience better overall. And now, with emergency satellite services available on iPhone 13, you can feel even more secure no matter where you are.
