Microsoft brings Xbox Cloud Gaming to Game Pass Core and Standard tiers

Microsoft is testing Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass Core and Standard members, adding PC titles and expanding access beyond Ultimate.

Microsoft has begun expanding its Xbox Cloud Gaming service beyond Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, allowing Game Pass Core and Standard subscribers to access the feature for the first time. The company has launched an Xbox Insider test to trial cloud gaming support. It is also offering these subscribers the opportunity to play select PC titles, thereby increasing flexibility across devices.

Wider access to Xbox Cloud Gaming

Until now, Xbox Cloud Gaming has only been available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which costs US$19.99 per month. The new Insider programme allows members on lower subscription tiers to stream cloud-compatible games included in their Game Pass library or games they already own.

“As part of this Insider experience, Xbox Game Pass Core and Standard subscribers will be able to stream cloud playable games included with their subscription or select cloud playable games they own,” the Xbox Insider team explained.

The trial marks a significant step towards making cloud gaming more affordable and widely accessible. Microsoft recently suggested it was exploring lower-cost ways to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to more players. In addition to this new testing phase, the company has previously been reported to be developing a standalone version of Xbox Cloud Gaming and has hinted at a potential free, ad-supported tier.

PC games are now available for lower-tier members

Alongside this development, Microsoft is also testing access to PC game titles for Game Pass Core and Standard subscribers. This will enable members to play specific games on PCs or handheld Windows devices, providing a greater choice for those who wish to game across multiple platforms.

“As part of testing, Xbox Insiders subscribed to Game Pass Core or Standard will, for the first time, gain access to PC versions of select titles, giving you even more flexibility and the choice to play on a PC or Windows handheld,” the company stated.

The move signals Microsoft’s intention to create a seamless gaming ecosystem, allowing players to transition between devices with ease.

How to take part in the Insider test

Players interested in trying Xbox Cloud Gaming or PC titles through these lower-tier subscriptions can join Microsoft’s Xbox Insider programme. Once enrolled, users can visit xbox.com/play to start streaming cloud-based games or download the Xbox app on Windows to access compatible PC games.

This trial is expected to gather feedback and help Microsoft refine the experience before a wider rollout, further solidifying the company’s position as a leader in gaming services.
