Microsoft unveils Intel-powered Surface Laptop 5G, shipping from 26 August

Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop 5G launches on 26 August, offering built-in 5G, AI features, and Intel Ultra chips starting from US$1,799.

Microsoft has unveiled a new 5G version of its Surface Laptop, equipped with Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 2 processors. The device is set to begin shipping on 26 August, with prices starting at US$1,799.99. Built with business users in mind, the Surface Laptop 5G introduces advanced connectivity options and AI capabilities, while maintaining the signature design of Microsoft’s Surface range.

Upgraded design with built-in 5G support

The Surface Laptop 5G closely resembles the existing 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7, but features several key internal changes to accommodate 5G connectivity. These include the addition of a 5G modem and support for both eSIMs and physical nano SIM cards, which are accessible via the side of the laptop.

Unlike many devices that integrate a modem, Microsoft has designed a dynamic antenna system tailored for optimal performance. According to Nancie Gaskill, general manager of the Surface business, “At the heart of Surface Laptop 5G is a dynamic antenna system that continuously adapts to its environment.” The system comprises six antennas that automatically adjust according to how the device is held or used, ensuring a more consistent signal.

To achieve this, Microsoft developed a new material that supports radio signal transmission without sacrificing the device’s build quality. “We developed a custom multi-layered laminate that meets all of these needs, enabling reliable 5G performance without compromising portability or design,” Gaskill added.

Specifications and pricing

The base model of the Surface Laptop 5G is priced at US$1,799 and features an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The most advanced configuration costs US$2,699 and includes Intel’s Core Ultra 7 chip, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. All configurations will be available in Microsoft’s platinum silver colour.

Beyond processing power, all models of the Surface Laptop 5G come equipped with an NPU (neural processing unit), enabling access to Microsoft’s newest Copilot Plus AI features. This addition enhances productivity tools by providing intelligent assistance and advanced performance optimisation.

Microsoft has confirmed that the Surface Laptop 5G has been tested for compatibility with over 100 mobile network operators in more than 50 countries, aiming to offer seamless connectivity regardless of location. In addition to its built-in 5G functionality, the laptop can also act as a 5G mobile hotspot, sharing its connection with other devices via Wi-Fi.

Business-first focus with wider device rollout

The new Surface Laptop 5G is primarily targeted at business customers, offering mobile professionals uninterrupted internet access and enterprise-ready AI features while on the move. Microsoft is positioning the device as a reliable tool for organisations seeking modern computing capabilities with enhanced connectivity.

In line with this business-oriented approach, Microsoft is also making the latest versions of its Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch models available to enterprise customers starting immediately.

With the launch of the Surface Laptop 5G, Microsoft continues to focus on combining sleek, portable design with powerful performance and next-generation connectivity, helping professionals stay productive wherever they are.
