Mistral partners with Microsoft, unveils new AI model and chat app

Explore the breakthroughs in AI with Mistral's latest model, Mistral Large, and its strategic partnership with Microsoft.

In an exciting development in the world of artificial intelligence, Mistral, a trailblazing AI startup, has announced the launch of its new and most sophisticated model yet, Mistral Large. This announcement comes alongside news of a strategic partnership with Microsoft, signalling a significant leap forward for the one-year-old company, already famous for its unique Word Art logo and record-breaking seed funding in European history.

Mistral Large: Redefining multilingual AI capabilities

You are about to witness a groundbreaking advancement in AI technology with the introduction of Mistral Large. It is designed as a text generation model and excels in complex, multilingual reasoning tasks. Mistral Large’s ability to understand, reason with, and generate text in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. It’s not just about language proficiency; this model boasts a deep understanding of grammar and cultural nuances, ensuring superior results.

Mistral Large has a significant context window of 32K tokens, allowing it to handle extensive documents and recall information highly. However, it’s worth noting that while the model shows great promise, it still has areas for improvement. In the MMLU benchmark, Mistral Large achieved an accuracy of 81.2%, just behind GPT-4’s 86.4%. It surpassed other notable models like Gemini Pro 1.0 and Llama 2 70B, but its performance in coding benchmarks, particularly the HumanE coding test, was less stellar, with an accuracy of 45.1%.

Expanding reach through strategic partnerships and innovative chat app

The partnership between Mistral and Microsoft is a strategic move that significantly enhances Mistral’s reach and impact. Mistral’s models, including the advanced Mistral Large, will be available on Azure AI Studio and Azure Machine Learning through this collaboration. This makes Mistral one of the very few companies to have its commercial language models hosted on Azure’s platform.

To showcase its models’ capabilities and attract potential customers, Mistral has also launched a multilingual chat app. This conversational assistant is not just a demonstration of Mistral’s technological prowess; it’s an interactive platform for users to experience the models in a fun and educational setting. While the app offers a glimpse into what Mistral’s models can do, it’s important to note that it does not have internet access and may occasionally deliver outdated or inaccurate information.

Robust financial backing and a promising future

Mistral’s journey in the AI landscape has been remarkable, with the company securing over US$500 million in seed and series A funding from renowned investors like Lightspeed Venture Partners and Andreessen Horowitz. This financial backing not only underscores the potential and confidence in Mistral’s technology but also sets the stage for its future growth and innovation in AI.

With these developments, Mistral is not just demonstrating its technological expertise; it’s shaping the future of AI. The company’s recent achievements, including Mistral Large and its partnership with Microsoft, indicate AI’s growing significance and potential in various sectors. As Mistral continues to innovate and expand its offerings, it’s a company that’s certainly making waves in the AI industry.
