Sony unveils a sleeker PS5 model with optional disc drive

Discover Sony's latest PS5 model with a removable disc drive launching this November. This sleeker design offers flexible gaming options and comes with a host of new features.

Sony has taken the wraps off a new version of its PS5 console with a removable disc drive, setting the stage for a November launch. This revamped model, often dubbed the PS5 “Slim”, is compact and allows players to choose between a digital or disc-based gaming experience.

A closer look at the design alterations

The fresh PS5 model is adorned with several design tweaks, making it a notable departure from its predecessor. The key change is the detachable disc drive, which significantly reduces the console’s volume by over 30 per cent and sheds up to 24 per cent of its weight, depending on the chosen model. This drive, housed in a bulge on the console’s side, can be removed and swapped with a side panel.

The PS5 has been refined further with a change in its port arrangement. Now, it flaunts two slits on each side and dual USB-C ports up front, replacing the existing model’s single USB-C and USB-A ports. Moreover, it comes with a horizontal stand, while a new vertical stand compatible with all PS5 models is available for an additional cost. Sony has also bumped up the storage capacity, offering 1TB in the new models compared to the 825GB in the existing one.

Pricing and availability across regions

Sony has priced the new PS5 at US$499.99 with the disc drive included and US$449.99 for the Digital Edition. For those looking to add a Blu-ray disc drive later, it’s available separately for US$79.99. The new model is set to hit the US markets in November at select retailers and through Sony’s PlayStation direct site. Following the US launch, a global rollout will ensue in the subsequent months, making the new model the sole available option once the inventory of the current PS5 model depletes.

In Europe, the pricing is set at €549.99 for the model with the drive and €449.99 for the Digital Edition, while in the UK, it’s £479.99 with the drive or £389.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition. As for Japan, the prices are 66,980 JPY and 59,980 JPY for the disc drive model and Digital Edition, respectively.

The unveiling of this model follows rumours and a leak hinting at a PS5 with a detachable drive. This announcement also comes on the heels of Sony’s first PS5 sale, which saw significant price cuts in various regions, including the UK, Germany, and India.

Sony reveals a revamped PS5 model with a detachable disc drive, slated for a November release. This sleeker model offers gamers a choice between digital and disc-based gaming and design and port modifications for a better gaming experience.

This model challenges the traditional console framework, offering a unique adaptability that caters to the evolving preferences of gamers. With a more compact build and flexible pricing options across different regions, it’s a compelling upgrade for avid gamers. It could steer the broader console market towards offering more modular designs.
