Sony unveils RX1R III full-frame camera with AI enhancements and eco-friendly design

Sony launches RX1R III full-frame camera with AI autofocus, Creative Looks, and eco-friendly packaging for advanced image quality and usability.

Sony has introduced the RX1R III, the third-generation model in its RX1R series. The new camera combines a 61-megapixel 35 mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor with the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine and a ZEISS Sonnar T* 35 mm F2 fixed lens.

High resolution in a compact form

The RX1R III delivers high resolution and sensitivity with low noise and wide dynamic range. This is made possible by the back-illuminated 61-megapixel sensor, which features an anti-reflection coating and omits the optical low-pass filter to ensure improved image quality. The integrated lens has also been finely optimised, with each component adjusted at the micron level to maximise optical performance while maintaining a compact size.

The camera includes a fixed lens, but users can simulate the flexibility of multiple prime lenses through the Step Crop Shooting function. This allows easy switching between focal lengths equivalent to 35 mm, 50 mm, and 70 mm, using custom buttons or dials. For RAW format images, the focal length can be changed in post-production. A macro mode is also available via the lens’s macro ring, enabling close-up shooting at distances as near as 20 cm, with a maximum magnification of 0.26x.

Advanced autofocus and creative controls

The RX1R III is equipped with Sony’s latest AI processing unit, also used in its professional Alpha series cameras. This technology helps the camera detect and track subjects accurately by recognising shapes, eyes, bodies, and heads—even when faces are not visible. Autofocus is supported across 78% of the image area with up to 693 phase-detection AF points for still photography.

For added creative flexibility, the camera includes twelve built-in Creative Looks that can be used for both photos and video. These settings adjust hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, and sharpness. Among the most distinctive options are FL2, which produces soft, nostalgic tones, and FL3, which adds vivid colour to images.

Practical design and sustainability focus

The RX1R III features a durable magnesium alloy body that balances robustness with portability. The design includes a flat top surface and built-in dials for ease of use, while the improved grip offers a comfortable and secure hold. An electronic viewfinder with 2.36 million-dot resolution and 0.70x magnification further enhances usability.

Power is supplied by the NP-FW50 rechargeable battery, offering up to 300 still shots on a single charge. The camera also supports USB Type-C charging, including from USB Power Delivery-compatible devices or external power banks for extended usage.

Sony has aligned the RX1R III with its ‘Road to Zero’ environmental initiative. The product is made in facilities powered entirely by renewable energy and ships in packaging made from Sony’s proprietary Original Blended Material. This replaces plastic with a more environmentally friendly solution.

In addition to its eco-conscious design, the RX1R III offers accessibility features such as a Screen Reader and Display Magnification, enabling visually impaired users to navigate menus and settings with greater ease.

Accessories for added functionality

Sony has introduced several optional accessories for the RX1R III. The TG-2 thumb grip attaches to the Multi Interface Shoe for more stable handling, even during one-handed operation, while maintaining a unified look with the camera body.

The LCS-RXL body case protects the camera from scratches and dust while allowing access to all essential ports, including USB, HDMI, and tripod mount. It also improves grip comfort and overall handling.

Lastly, the LHP-1 lens hood, made from lightweight aluminium, adds further protection for the lens and attaches securely using a bayonet mount.
