The Nintendo Switch has been out for quite some time now. While we all know how great the earlier releases were, this is 2020, and there are some great new games out now. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are fantastic games for the Nintendo Switch and are frequently recommended to new Switch owners. However, there are more recent releases, including some from this year, which are fantastic and perfect for both Switch owners, old and new.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Top 5 games for Nintendo Switch 2020 - 1

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has one of the best sales for any Nintendo Switch game, making it an exceptional game. So far, the game has sold over 22.4 million units, and considering players have spent a long time waiting for a new Animal Crossing game to release, it’s easy to see why this game is loved. It hits every good spot for this series with great gameplay, lots of customization options, and co-op.

Pokemon Sword and Shield

Top 5 games for Nintendo Switch 2020 - 2

These two are the latest Pokemon games and while they did release in 2019, there are expansions coming. One of them is already released, and a second is releasing later in 2020. Pokemon Sword and Shield have brought many new features to the main game series, including a fully 3D world, a new feature called Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing to make Pokemon into giants and Raids with co-op has been introduced. Pokemon Sword and Shield are the Pokemon games we all love but with new features and mechanics, including a Poke Jobs system to earn experience and items.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

Top 5 games for Nintendo Switch 2020 - 3

This game is a remake of the 2005 Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team games. If you grew up playing either of those games, then picking this new version is an excellent idea since it’s almost the same. The only difference is that being defeated in a dungeon will make the player control the next Pokemon in their team instead, and there are Shiny Pokemon here now too.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Top 5 games for Nintendo Switch 2020 - 4

The Origami King follows the standard 2D paper Mario set in a 3D world to keep the fun atmosphere seen across the series. In this addition to the series, there are puzzles to complete, and Travel Buddies have finally returned. While it has many good points such as the story and world, it does have a problem. The battle system is weak compared to the past games in the series due to the lack of depth it has.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Top 5 games for Nintendo Switch 2020 - 5

The game was released on Halloween 2019 and is the long-awaited sequel to the 2001 and 2013 Luigi’s Mansion games. For those who don’t know, this series follows Luigi as he explores haunted hotel to rescue friends from the ghosts that live there. Mario usually gets all the love, but Luigi is the star for this series where he hunts ghosts down, and in Luigi’s Mansion 3, there’s an expanded multiplayer. It has a co-op mode and also competitive modes.

Late 2020 and beyond

There’s still plenty of time for more Nintendo Switch releases this year. For example, No More Heroes III, Gods & Monsters, Doom Eternal, and more are also releasing for the console this year. There are many games to keep an eye out for this year and even more to watch for news about over the coming year, such as Pokemon Snap.
