Veeam launches new Splunk integration to bolster cyber resilience

Veeam Software bolsters cyber resilience with a new Splunk extension, improving visibility and security for backup environments.

Veeam Software has introduced a new Splunk extension, enhancing the security monitoring of its Veeam Data Platform. This integration will help businesses better protect against cyber threats by providing comprehensive monitoring tools, including dashboards, reports, and alerts. Available at no extra cost to holders of Veeam Data Platform Advanced or Premium licenses, the extension is designed to improve the visibility and security of Veeam backup environments.

Escalating threats necessitate enhanced protections

In the past year, 76% of enterprises have experienced at least one ransomware attack, with 93% of these incidents targeting data backups specifically. This alarming trend underscores the critical need for robust security measures that encompass all aspects of an organisation’s data infrastructure, including backup systems. The Veeam App for Splunk addresses this need by enabling security professionals to monitor their backup environments through the same interface used for other systems, thereby simplifying and enhancing cybersecurity oversight.

John Jester, Veeam’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasised the strategic importance of this integration. “Veeam is focused on powering data resilience for every customer and this includes tight integration with the leading security platforms,” Jester stated. “Now security professionals can use Splunk to closely monitor their Veeam backup environments through detailed dashboards, reports and alerts. Combating cyber-attacks requires integration across your infrastructure, and the Veeam App for Splunk brings Veeam event data into Splunk, enabling customers to monitor security events like ransomware, accidental deletion, malware and other cyber threats using their current tools. It means enterprises can quickly and easily process vital monitoring and event data on their Veeam backup environments, in the same single pane of glass as other source environments they may be monitoring.”

Features and availability of the new app

The Veeam App for Splunk comes packed with features designed to streamline security monitoring:

  • Daily monitoring of job statuses and security events through built-in dashboards.
  • Configurable reports and alerts based on severity levels.
  • Support for multiple Veeam Backup & Replication servers and data source locations.
  • Role-based permissions and app configuration backups.

Christophe Bertrand, Principal Analyst at SiliconANGLE Media, Inc. | theCUBE Research & Advisory, highlighted the importance of securing backup systems. “In the constant fight against cyber-criminals and ransomware, it is key to ‘protect the protector,’ which means securing the backup apparatus to make it impenetrable to hacking, adulteration, deletion, etc. There can be no recovery if there are no backups,” he explained. “This requires a robust set of tools and controls to deliver a truly secure backup infrastructure. This is why the addition of the Veeam App for Splunk to the already comprehensive set of tools Veeam offers is key. With robust monitoring and security features and full integration with Splunk user roles and location management, end-users will be able to deliver dashboards, alerts, and reports. With this new integration, we expect that Veeam users will not only improve their cyber-recovery posture but also be in a great position to deliver on cyber-recovery SLAs.”

The app supports Splunk Enterprise 9.1.0 and later, as well as Splunk Cloud Platform 9.1.2308 and onwards. It is available for download on Splunkbase.
