AMD releases 2024 corporate responsibility report, highlighting sustainable progress and inclusivity

Explore AMD's 2024 Corporate Responsibility Report detailing their commitment to environmental sustainability, diversity, and social impact.

AMD has issued its latest Corporate Responsibility Report, detailing strides towards its significant environmental and social goals for 2023. The report, grounded in a rigorous ESG materiality assessment, focuses on environmental sustainability, digital impact, diversity, inclusion, and supply chain responsibility.

Justin Murrill, AMD’s director of Corporate Responsibility, underscored the imperative of value-driven action in the face of industry challenges. “We are in the midst of a major inflection point in the computing industry, and it is more important than ever to put our values into action and align our efforts with some of the biggest challenges facing our world, including addressing climate change and energy demand, enabling advancements in science and medicine, and respecting human rights,” he stated.

Driving environmental sustainability

In 2023, AMD championed environmental sustainability through strategic design innovations. By prioritising performance and energy efficiency, AMD’s chipset architecture has effectively addressed sustainability challenges. The production of 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs with separate compute chipsets instead of a singular monolithic die has prevented approximately 132,000 metric tons of CO2e. This prevention is nearly triple the company’s annual operational carbon emissions and almost five times its water usage in a year.

Additionally, AMD’s latest 4th Gen EPYC servers are revolutionising data centres by replacing outdated servers, thereby reducing rack space by 70% and energy use by 65%. AMD is also on course to achieve a 30x improvement in energy efficiency for its processors and accelerators from 2020 to 2025.

Enhancing scientific research and STEM education

AMD’s commitment to education and research has had a profound impact. Since 2020, the company has equipped over 150 universities, research bodies, and non-profits with its technology, reaching around 61 million people. In 2023, AMD supported a range of initiatives across AI and machine learning research, and various educational programs in HPC and AI.

The AMD Learning Labs initiative has also grown, with a new facility inaugurated at Maynooth University in Ireland. AMD staff worldwide provide mentoring and practical experiences to students, enriching their learning journey.

Empowering diversity and community involvement

AMD is fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. According to the 2023 AMDer Survey, 92% of employees feel the company nurtures an environment conducive to success across diverse groups. The Advancing Women in Tech program, introduced in 2023, has seen significant engagement and is expanding, with new cohorts planned for 2024. AMD staff also dedicated over 25,000 hours to volunteering last year, underscoring their commitment to community engagement.

Strengthening supply chain collaboration

AMD’s strategic collaborations across its supply chain aim to promote human rights and environmental sustainability. The company has stepped up due diligence to address human rights impacts, conducting Responsible Business Alliance audits on 84% of its manufacturing suppliers from 2020 to 2023. Moreover, a significant percentage of its suppliers have engaged in educational programs about forced labour prevention.

The full 2023-24 Corporate Responsibility Report is accessible via AMD’s website for more detailed insights into AMD’s corporate responsibility efforts. This report adheres to the Global Reporting Initiative Standards. It incorporates climate-related disclosures as recommended by the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, alongside relevant disclosures from the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board.
