Blackmagic unveils Camera ProDock for iPhone 17 Pro filmmaking

Blackmagic launches Camera ProDock for iPhone 17 Pro, adding pro filmmaking connections, including genlock, HDMI, and audio ports.

Blackmagic Design has announced the launch of its new Camera ProDock, a device created to expand the professional filmmaking capabilities of Apple’s latest smartphones. The announcement follows a brief mention during Apple’s “Awe dropping” event on 10 September, when senior vice president Greg Joswiak highlighted the accessory’s role in unlocking advanced video production features for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The Camera ProDock is designed to “add professional camera connections to iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max”, according to Blackmagic. It connects directly to the iPhone’s USB-C port, allowing the smartphone to integrate seamlessly with professional video production tools such as switchers and timecode generators. By supporting Apple’s new genlock capability, the dock enables the iPhone to synchronise with multiple cameras in a multi-camera environment. This makes it particularly useful in complex productions, such as filming LED walls in virtual studios, where it can eliminate flickering by matching the capture rate to the refresh rate of the large display panels.

Features built for professional videographers

The Camera ProDock provides a wide range of physical connections tailored to industry-standard filmmaking needs. These include three additional USB-C ports for accessories such as external storage, as well as a locking 12V DC power input to ensure a reliable power supply during extended shoots. It also features an HDMI port to connect an external preview display, along with two BNC connectors designed for genlock and timecode synchronisation.

Audio professionals are not left out, as the dock includes two 3.5mm stereo audio ports for connecting external microphones or headphones. To support more elaborate filming setups, Blackmagic has added locking mounting points on both the top and bottom of the dock. This allows the unit to be securely integrated into professional rigs, making it easier for filmmakers to use the iPhone as part of larger camera systems.

The dock is also designed to work with the free Blackmagic Camera app, which offers manual controls and advanced tools tailored for professional videographers. This app provides far greater flexibility than the standard iOS camera app, enabling filmmakers to fine-tune their shots with precision.

Availability and pricing

The Blackmagic Camera ProDock will be available globally through the company’s network of authorised resellers as well as directly from Apple. The device has been priced at US$295, though Apple’s online store currently lists it as “coming soon” with a price of US$299.95.

With the iPhone 17 Pro gaining recognition for its professional filmmaking capabilities, the Camera ProDock is expected to attract attention from both independent creators and larger production teams seeking a compact yet powerful solution for high-quality video work.
