Apple’s new iPhone SE and iPad are expected early this year

Apple is set to release a new iPhone SE and iPad in 2024, featuring USB-C and AI updates, and they are likely to launch by April.

Apple is expected to release a new iPhone SE and updated basic iPad within the first quarter of this year. Based on information shared by a private source on X known for accurate iOS-related leaks, reports suggest the devices could debut alongside iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3.

If Apple follows its usual schedule for iOS and iPadOS updates, these announcements could happen as early as late January. However, there’s some debate about the exact timing of these launches.

Why an early launch makes sense

Recently, Apple stopped selling the iPhone SE in the European Union due to new regulations requiring USB-C ports on electronic devices. The upcoming iPhone SE is expected to include a USB-C port, allowing Apple to quickly resume sales in the region. Therefore, an early launch seems logical.

However, respected Apple analyst Mark Gurman has a different view. Gurman predicts the new iPhone SE and iPad will launch later, stating that “by April” is a more realistic timeline. He also believes Apple plans to release updated versions of the MacBook Air before introducing these devices.

According to Gurman, the MacBook Air refresh, which is expected to include minor updates like improved specifications, could be unveiled between January and March. Launching the MacBook Air first would allow Apple to focus its marketing efforts on the iPhone SE and iPad later in the year.

What to expect from the new devices

The next iPhone SE is rumoured to feature a new design which significantly departs from its current look. Additionally, it’s expected to support Apple Intelligence, a term often used to describe advanced AI-driven features. This update could make the iPhone SE more competitive in the mid-range market.

Meanwhile, the basic iPad is also likely to receive an upgrade. The last update, released in late 2022, introduced a modernised design but included an older chip that doesn’t support Apple Intelligence. The upcoming model will reportedly include a more powerful chip, such as the A17 Pro, enabling it to run Apple Intelligence.

If these reports are accurate, Apple could use the iPhone SE and iPad launches to showcase advancements in its AI technology, setting them apart from previous models.

Whether these devices are revealed in January, March, or April, it’s clear that Apple is gearing up for a busy start to the year. All eyes remain on Cupertino as we wait for official announcements.
