DJI Flip: A US$439 foldable camera drone built for portability

Discover the DJI Flip, a US$439 foldable camera drone with 4K recording, 48MP photos, and 31-minute battery life, perfect for photographers on the go.

DJI has unveiled the Flip, a compact and foldable camera drone designed to cater to photographers and videographers who value portability and performance. Released just four months after the ultra-compact Neo, this new addition showcases DJI’s continued innovation in creating small, consumer-friendly drones.

The Flip features an ingenious design with foldable propeller guards that stack neatly for maximum portability. At US$439, it is closer to the Mini 3 (US$419) than the more budget-friendly Neo (US$199), making it a mid-range choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

A blend of simplicity and high-performance

The DJI Flip strikes a balance between user-friendly functionality and impressive imaging capabilities. Borrowing from the Neo’s ease of use and the Mini’s superior photo quality, this drone is perfect for those who want to streamline their outdoor photography or videography.

Its 4K camera captures footage at 60 frames per second, with an additional 100fps option for slow-motion videos. For still photography, the Flip boasts a 48-megapixel camera with up to 4x zoom, allowing you to take detailed shots from a distance.

Weighing 249 grams—similar to the Mavic Mini—the Flip is lightweight yet significantly sturdier than the Neo’s 135 grams. The additional weight offers extended flight time, offering an impressive 31 minutes per charge, compared to the Neo’s 18 minutes. This added endurance is particularly valuable for users capturing long video segments.

Advanced features for better flying

The Flip isn’t just about photography; it also offers intelligent flying capabilities. Automatic braking helps prevent high-altitude collisions, making it safer for new and experienced pilots.

Charging and data transfer speeds have been improved for convenience, while the drone introduces a new Local Data Mode. This feature mimics a smartphone’s aeroplane mode, disconnecting the device from the internet while in flight. It’s a welcome addition for users concerned about data privacy or operating in restricted environments.

Available now in the U.S.

The DJI Flip is now shipping in the United States, and availability is expected to expand to other regions soon. While the current geopolitical landscape may affect DJI’s long-term operations in the U.S., the Flip remains a strong contender for those seeking a portable, high-performance drone today.
