Google confirms the dismissal of around a thousand employees

[output_post_excerpt]

In a recent development, Google has announced the dismissal of approximately a thousand employees, a move that affects various departments within the company. This significant decision highlights the ongoing adjustments in the tech giant post-pandemic.

Impact across multiple teams

The layoffs have not only impacted the Google Hardware team, known for products like Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit, but also have extended to core engineering and Google Assistant teams. A statement from Google to The Verge confirmed the removal of “a few hundred” roles in each of these divisions. This number approximates around a thousand layoffs on Wednesday, based on a general interpretation of “few.”

The extent of layoffs

There might be more dismissals that are yet unknown. Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini did not confirm if the disclosed number represents the total layoffs in this round. Mencini ceased communication after confirming existing reports of layoffs from 9to5Google and Semafor, with The New York Times also reporting on the engineering team’s layoffs.

Strategic restructuring

When discussing the hardware team layoffs, Mencini highlighted that “a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better.” She mentioned that this restructuring includes role eliminations worldwide. This suggests that Google may gradually reveal these changes to manage their impact.

Perspective on the job cuts

As of September 30, 2023, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, had 182,381 employees. Therefore, the reduction of approximately a thousand jobs constitutes about half a per cent of the total workforce. This scenario reflects a broader trend of layoffs in the technology sector.
