Google introduces a new ‘Web’ filter for cleaner search results

Google introduces a new 'Web' filter for search results, catering to users preferring a text-only view for simpler, focused browsing.

Google is set to enhance your search experience by introducing a new filter that allows you to exclusively view text-based webpages in your search results.

The “Web” filter, which is being rolled out globally over the next two days, caters to users who desire a more straightforward, text-only view of search results. This new feature is particularly useful for those looking to find longer-form text documents, when using devices with limited internet access, or simply for those who prefer text without the distraction of rich media.

Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, explained the rationale behind this update: “We’ve added this after hearing from some that there are times when they’d prefer to just see links to web pages in their search results. This is a nod to the early days of internet search when results were simpler and more text-focused.”

How the ‘Web’ filter works

On mobile devices, the “Web” filter appears alongside existing options such as “Images” and “News.” For desktop users, the filter may be hidden under the “More” options, depending on the nature of the search query.

Google’s search filters, which include this new ‘Web’ option, allow you to fine-tune the results displayed by type. These filters are dynamically generated based on your search query and what Google’s algorithms deem most relevant.

In addition to specific filters, Google introduces “topics,”  which are suggested related terms that help refine or broaden your search into new areas. This feature aids in exploring related content without having to leave the search page.

For those interested in a deeper understanding of how Google’s search filters enhance your search experience, detailed information is available on Google’s official help page.
