Mac mini gets a retro makeover with Wokyis M5 dock featuring a tiny display and powerful hub

Wokyis M5 brings retro Macintosh style to the Mac mini, combining a 5-inch screen and 13 ports in a compact, functional dock.

A new accessory is bringing nostalgic charm to Apple’s modern hardware. The Wokyis M5, a compact Mac mini dock, revives the iconic look of the original Macintosh while offering powerful functionality in a petite form. Featuring a fully operational 5-inch screen and an array of ports, the dock has already attracted significant interest, surpassing its Kickstarter funding goal by over 16 times.

A nostalgic design with modern hardware

The Wokyis M5 dock channels the vintage design of the classic Macintosh, combining it with the compact power of the latest Mac mini. Created to complement the current-generation Mac mini with its smaller chassis and M4-series processor, the dock adds more than just visual flair.

At the heart of the M5 is a 5-inch display that goes beyond novelty. It functions as a secondary screen, capable of extending or mirroring the Mac mini’s display. This small yet practical panel can help control media, monitor messages, or manage utility apps, much like any standard external display. Adding to the retro charm, the unit also includes a front-facing power button designed in the style of Apple’s classic rainbow logo colour scheme.

While designed primarily for the Mac mini, the Wokyis M5 dock also supports MacBook connectivity, offering additional versatility.

Extensive connectivity and storage options

Beyond aesthetics, the Wokyis M5 packs impressive technical capabilities. The dock features a total of 13 ports, making it a valuable hub for creative professionals, developers, and anyone who demands extensive connectivity from a compact system. These ports include a 10Gbps USB-C connection, four USB-A ports with 1Gbps speeds, an HDMI output, SD and microSD card readers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

In addition to the wide selection of ports, the dock features an M.2 SSD slot that supports up to 8TB of storage. This feature enables users to significantly expand their Mac mini’s storage capabilities without cluttering their desk space.

Pricing for the Wokyis M5 varies depending on the configuration. According to the brand’s website, the standard retail price is set at US$199. However, Kickstarter backers can access discounted rates. The 10Gbps version is available on Kickstarter for US$169, with early bird pledges reducing the cost further to US$109. For users requiring more bandwidth, an 80Gbps variant is priced at US$339, or US$199 for early bird supporters.

Inspired by a designer’s vision

The Wokyis M5 appears to draw inspiration from the work of Scott Yu-Jan, a product and interaction designer currently employed at Google. Over a year ago, Yu-Jan gained attention for his innovative 3D-printed dock that combined a Mac Studio and an iPad mini in a design reminiscent of the original Macintosh. He later created a portable workstation version for the Mac mini, complete with a wide-screen display and a full-sized keyboard. While Yu-Jan’s designs are not commercially available, they have influenced the form and function of the Wokyis M5.

With shipments scheduled to begin next month, the Wokyis M5 is set to offer users a stylish and practical way to enhance their Mac mini setups. For more details, please visit the official Kickstarter page and Wokyis’ website.
