Marathon launches with a limited edition PlayStation 5 DualSense controller
Bungie reveals a Marathon-themed PS5 DualSense controller priced at US$85, launching alongside the sci-fi shooter later this year.
Bungie has confirmed that its upcoming sci-fi shooter Marathon will launch alongside a limited edition PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. The announcement appeared as part of a broader release of Marathon information, which was shared earlier than planned after details surfaced online through an Xbox-related leak. Sony and Bungie subsequently moved quickly to make the information public.
Marathon’s distinctive science-fiction aesthetic inspires the controller and will be sold as an official PlayStation accessory. It joins a growing line of limited edition DualSense designs released to coincide with major game launches. However, early reactions suggest this design stands out for its restrained, cohesive appearance rather than relying on loud colours or heavy branding.
Sony has priced the Marathon DualSense controller at US$85. Pre-orders will open on 29 January at 10:00 a.m. local time through direct.playstation.com. Availability may vary by region, and, as with previous limited-edition controllers, supplies are expected to be limited once sales begin.
Design approach and visual details
The Marathon-themed DualSense takes a notably subtle approach compared with some recent special editions. The design blends clean lines, understated colours, and carefully placed symbols that reflect the game’s futuristic tone. Rather than overwhelming the controller with logos or dramatic textures, the visual elements are integrated into the hardware’s overall form.
Typography and iconography play a central role in the design. Instead of appearing as decorative additions, these elements align closely with the controller’s existing layout and surfaces. This helps the limited edition model feel like a natural extension of the standard DualSense rather than a cosmetic overhaul. Industry observers have noted that this design philosophy contrasts with other recent releases that have divided PlayStation fans.
One of the most distinctive choices is the placement of the Marathon branding. The name of the game appears only on the underside of the controller, displayed in neon-style text that is hidden mainly during normal use. This restrained branding may appeal to players who want a collector’s item that does not draw immediate attention when placed alongside standard hardware.
Comparisons have already been drawn with earlier limited edition DualSense controllers. Some recent models were criticised for feeling visually cluttered or overly bold, while others were seen as lacking character. By comparison, the Marathon controller strikes a balance between personality and practicality, which could broaden its appeal beyond dedicated franchise fans.
Additional accessories and market expectations
Alongside the DualSense controller, Sony will also release a Marathon-themed Pulse Elite wireless headset. The headset will be available on the same date as the controller, with a recommended retail price of US$170. While the headset carries the same visual theme, it enters the market at a significantly higher price point, which may limit its audience to more committed collectors.
The Pulse Elite headset follows Sony’s established design language for its audio accessories, with Marathon-inspired details layered onto the existing form. As with previous themed headsets, it is intended to visually complement the controller, offering a coordinated set for players interested in fully themed hardware.
The controller’s limited availability has already sparked discussion about its long-term availability. Previous DualSense editions tied to specific games have often sold out quickly, particularly when production runs were small. This has led to higher resale prices and increased interest from collectors rather than everyday players.
Market reaction will likely depend on both supply levels and Marathon’s performance. Hardware tied closely to a single game can become highly sought after if the title proves successful, but interest may fade if the game fails to connect with a wider audience. Sony has not yet confirmed how many units of the Marathon DualSense controller will be produced.
For now, the controller represents a notable addition to PlayStation’s expanding catalogue of themed accessories. Its restrained design and limited branding suggest a deliberate shift towards more understated collector hardware, potentially signalling a broader change in how Sony approaches future limited edition releases.
